I have a friend who's had a business doing this for at least 10 years. One of his customers is Chrysler. They prototype many of the parts for new cars this way. Pretty amazing to watch a part get built out of thin air--or so it would appear. Separate the scanner and the printer, connect them through the interweb, and it's the closest thing to a teleporter you may ever find.
