yet another OSX question

Is there some kind of master file manager for a/v files? like where i can set .rm and .ram files to be opened and only opened by Real Audio? As it is now, I have to download and drag the file to RA instead of utilizing the streaming capabilities.

I've gone into QT preferences, but can't see to remove .rm or .ram extensions from the defaults it should open. nor do RA's preferences have such an option.

thanks!

I think the streaming issue has to do with improperly coded web pages, but I'm not sure. If it's just the file itself, do a "get info" or control-click on the file, "open with" and select "always open with".

Since you're probably downloading these files, I think that your browser has a preference panel that allows you to set the program to open the downloaded files. I'm pretty sure IE does, not sure about Safari.

I have to download them because it if i try to stream them, QT tries to run the file - which obviously doesn't work with those extensions.

By "try to stream them" do you mean you're clicking on a link in a browser? I have RealPlayer 10 on two Macs, with osx and it plays/connects .ram suffixes. I don't understand why qt is involved with yours; qt doesn't even play those.
Do you have an example?

Its easy to do.

Find any File on your HD that has a .ram extenstion. (or whatever you want to change).

Click once on the icon to highlight it and then get info (press Apple - I)

you will see a section that says "open with" just choose the application you want. Then click the button "change all".

Your done.

i'll do that hornbri - but i think i already tried it and it didn't work. i'll let you know.

pmg - for example, if i try to listen to Denver Bronco games on the 'net, they use RealAudio streaming. Both IE and Safari try to use standalone QuickTime (IE) or embedded QuickTime (safari) to play this streaming audio. Does that make sense?

Do you have a link? What happens if you go to something like movies.guide.real.com/dvds and look at a movie preview? It should download a smal .ram link file, then real player should open that and begin the streaming.

got it. downloaded a .ram file, changed it under 'get info' and now it works fine - though the video is choppy. is it possible that video quality has already surpassed my video card and/or processor? i've got the 500 MHz G3 and 640Mb of RAM. though i never DID see that much improvement when i added the 512Gb RAM card.

I just watched the Alien v. Predator preview from the link above, and it looked fine...I'm writing this on an old G3 iBook, 500 mhz 256 RAM.
