RIP YAT. A giant of the game when he played. One of Marshall Texas finest!!!

I was just old enough and interested in football enough to see him play his last year in the NFL in 1964.

I remember the picture of him kneeling on the field with his helmet off and blood dripping from his head. No concussion protocols back then.
How close did he come to being a Longhorn?

th
Award winning photo ... photographer had to argue with the sports editor to get it published since there was no "action" in the shot and it wasn't published with game day coverage.

Because of that it wasn't eligible for a Pulitzer, but the photo is famous and in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A contemporary of Bobby Layne & Doak Walker.
Would there been enough room in the same college backfield?
