XP system recovery

Okay, so I think my XP is really FUBAR. When I start up the computer I get this error message that says Windows sockets initialization failed......whatever the **** that means. I can't connect to the internet from home now, I can't open windows media player, and the damn thing just runs soooo slow now.

So I went to the HP website on how to fix something like this, and what I find is something called a "Destructive Recovery" It sounds like this will just put what I had on the computer when I got it and clean everything up. Have any of you tried this before, and does it sound like I might really **** up my computer more if I do this.

The hp website said it will reinstall windows xp and the original software that came with the computer............ANY HELP would really be helpfull.

It's basically an image of the hard drive with the factory install on it. You will lose everything on that partition that wasn't there when you got it. It should work fine assuming your hardware is ok.

I really have a problem with doing this though. It's not the same clean installation that you would get if you formatted and reinstalled with the XP cd. Did the actual software come with your laptop, or do they just give you the ******** recovery disk?

I would backup any files you want to keep and then try running a repair from your xp cd. If your pc continues to act funny after that you will probably have to reformat and reinstall. If that doesn't work, I would bet your hard drive is bad.

Do you have XP System Restore enabled? Right click on "My Computer", click on "System Restore". If it's enabled, you don't need a disk to do a full restore.

Just an update on my problem.........I copied all my files last night and did excatly what the HP website said to do.........and now.........My computer works great
