xp pro?

I have a damn problem with my desktop pc. Here is the problem The Link

since my computer was built by a friend, the xp pro windows isnt exactly a "real" copy. Could i just use any system restoration disk from xp pro? And is all the rest of the stuff on my harddrive gone? Sorry for a dumb question but i dont know that hell of alot on computer software, bios, etc. TIA

i'd try system restore with any copy of xp you can get your hands on. you might be able to perform the restore, but since its not a legit version, you never know. might just want to sack up and buy a real copy.

Follow the steps under Damaged File System. Make sure the Windows XP installation disk is bootable otherwise the procedure will not work. Yes..any copy will do for the Recovery Console.

yep, i have actually been shopping around for a real version, but of course always looking for the cheaper route first. But i do need to get a real version. Thanks

ok i have a operating system reinstallation cd from my dell desktop that came with xp home. Will that allow me to fix this although it is xp home?

My bet is no. Pro and Home do not mix.

It probably doesn't matter as long as you're just running the chkdsk or fixboot programs.

depends...sometimes those dell cd's won't load up if it sense's its not a dell.
