This will be the third meeting between Texas (11-17, 4-13) and West Virginia (17-11, 9-8). Texas lost the first two games by nearly identical margins, 55-68 and 52-64. The first loss eliminated Texas from the NCAAs in 2012 and the second was the first league meeting between the two at WVU. WVU visits Austin for the first time as a conference foe this Tuesday. Texas knows that they will play in the 8-9 game in the upcoming league tournament. WVU, currently tied for fifth, could move into a tie for fourth with a win over Texas and an OU loss at Tech.
WVU has one player averaging double figures: Christal Caldwell (#1, 5-9 Jr. G) at 13.9 ppg. Ayana Dunning (# 33, 6-3 Sr. C) at 9.6 ppg and Taylor Palmer (# 2, 5-9 Jr. G) at 9.5 ppg rank second and third in scoring, respectively. Brooke Hampton (# 4, 5-9 Jr. G) has the best FG% at 47.4%. However, she has only taken 19 shots, making 9. Among the nine players that have played in all 17 league games, Darius Faulk (# 12, 5-10 Fr. G) at 45.7% (16-35), Jess Harlee (# 14, 6-1 Jr. F) at 43.2% (32-74), Palmer at 40.4% (55-136) and Dunning at 42.6% (69-169) are the only players making over 40% of their FGs. Caldwell is the leading shot taker for WVU, hitting 89 of 259 for 34.6%. Palmer (35-87, 40.2%) and Hampton (5-11, 45.5%) are the most accurate from BTA. Caldwell is second in 3s made and attempted, hitting on 27 of 72 for a respectable 37.5%. Dunning is also able to hit from BTA, going 8 of 27 for 29.6%. Bria Holmes (# 23, 6-1 Fr. G) also likes to take the 3pter, taking 53 of her 104 FG attempts from BTA, connecting on 12 for a percentage of 22.6. Averee Fields (# 5, 6-0 Soph. F) has been the best at getting the FT line, making 35-56 for 62.5%. There are two Mountaineers the Horns don’t want to see shooting FTs with the game on the line: Palmer (17-17, 100%) and Harlee (27-32, 84.4%). Caldwell (32-41, 78.0%) and Linda Stepney (# 22, 5-7 Soph. G; 12-16, 75.0%) are also good FT shooters. Dunning (58.6%) and Holmes (52.0%) would the players to foul at the end of the game.
WVU doesn’t have an outstanding rebounder. Dunning, with an average of 5.5 rpg, is tied with two others for 19th in the league. What WVU has are several good rebounders as Fields (5.4 rpg), Caldwell (4.6 rpg), Harlee (5.2 rpg) and Crystal Leary (# 32, 6-2 Soph. F; 4.4 rpg) swarm to the boards to provide support for Dunning. Stepney is the main distributor for WVU with 40 assists. Four others have over 20 assists each: Harlee (23), Faulk (25), Hampton (21) and Dunning (23). As in rebounding, the Mountaineers don’t have that outstanding shotblocker but use a committee approach with Harlee having 12 and Dunning 11. Stepney adds 9 blocks. Caldwell (34) and Harlee (33) top the Mountaineers in steals. Six others have at least 10 steals to help WVU rank as the best in the league in taking the ball away. Against Baylor, the second best team in the league in turnover margin, they were able to get 11 steals. In the first game against Texas, WVU got 8 steals but gave up 5.
Dunning, Caldwell, Stepney, Fields and Palmer have started all 17 league games for the Mountaineers. Faulk, Harlee, Holmes and Leary have played in all 17 Big 12 games, averaging between 23 mpg (Harlee) and 10 mpg (Faulk). Hampton has played in 15 league games and averages 8 mpg. Caldwell is the only player that averages over 30 mpg (31.7) while the other starters average between 23 and 27 mpg. WVU uses a nine player rotation extensively with a tenth getting near double digit minutes (Hampton).
Horns have three players in double figures heading into the final Big 12 regular season game: Chassidy: 12.9 ppg; Nneka: 11.4 ppg and Imani: 11.2 ppg. Empress at 8.6 ppg rounds out the top four scorers for Texas. Brady (4.1 ppg), Gigi (3.9 ppg) and Sara (1.3 ppg) add a total of 9.3 ppg off the bench as the main reserves. Imani tops the team in FG% (46.2%) and FGs made (78). Nneka (44.7%) and Empress (40.3%) join her in making at least 40% of their shots in league play. Chassidy continues as the main offensive player for Texas, hitting 73 of 196 (37.2%). She has raised her conference shooting percentage over a 100 pts in the last few games. She is the main 3pt threat for Texas at 26.9% (25-93) with Gigi (10-34, 29.4%) and Empress (5-24, 20.8%) also hoisting it up from BTA. Brady continues to lead the team in FT% at 88.9% (32-36) with Chassidy (22-30, 73.3%), Nneka (46-64, 71.9%) and Imani (33-44, 7.0%) also clicking on at least 70% of their FT attempts. Nneka leads the team in FTs made and attempted.Imani (9.5 rpg), Nneka (7.8 rpg) and Chassidy (5.6 rpg) provide the Horns with a strong rebounding presence. Celina has 55 assists with Empress second at 37. Chassidy (26), Brady (21) and Imani (20) all are at or over 20 assists in league play. Imani leads the way with 38 blocks while Nneka adds 10. Five others have at least two blocks each. Six players have recorded at least 10 steals with Celina’s 20 topping the group. Nneka (19) and Chassidy (18) are right on her heels.
Horns have ten active players with eight forming the main rotation. Starters for the past few games have been: Nneka, Imani, Chassidy, Empress and Celina. Imani and Empress have started all 17 games to date. Nneka with 16 starts and Chassidy with 15 have started every conference game they have played in. Celina has played in 17 Big 12 games and started 12. Brady has played in all 17 league games. Sara and Gigi have played in 15 Big 12 games and each has one start. Nadia has gotten into 5 games with Kayla playing in four. Chassidy (35.2 mpg), Empress (33.1 mpg) and Nneka (30.9 mpg) lead in mpg played. Imani (28.8 mpg), Brady (16.1 mpg), Gigi (14.2 mpg) and Celina (27.0 mpg) are all averaging in double digits in mpg played. Sara at 8.7 mpg is the other member of the main 8 player rotation. Nadia averages 5.4 mpg and Kayla 9.5 mpg.
Projected starters:
[pre]
Texas WVU
Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) Fields (6-0 Soph. F)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Dunning (6-3 Sr. C)
Chassidy (5-10 Jr. G) Caldwell (5-9 Jr. G)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Palmer (5-9 Jr. G)
Celina (5-8 Fr. G) Stepney (5-7 Soph. G) [/pre]
Last time out, Horns did an excellent job on Palmer, holding WVU’s leading scorer at the time to seven pts. But Dunning scored 19 inside and Fields took advantage of the coverage on Palmer to hit for 16 including 2-3 from BTA. For WVU, this game will be a bit different defensively as Chassidy missed the first game between the two teams. They will have to account for her while also looking to clamp down on Empress, who led Texas with 14 pts in the first game. Texas’ posts Nneka and Imani combined for 17 pts on 7 of 20 shooting (35%). They will need to do a better of converting their touches while defending Dunning who has a deceptive first step and some very nice moves around the post. Both Imani and Nneka got into foul trouble. They will need to remain on the floor for Texas. Texas did an outstanding job on Palmer in the last game, holding her to 20 pts below her average. Now, the defensive focus changes a bit towards Caldwell, who has led WVU in scoring in league play. Look for Empress to start on Caldwell this time instead of on Palmer.

WVU is one of the few teams that shoots worse than Texas. The good news for Texas is that they have been improving in almost every shooting category while WVU has pretty much stayed the same. For Texas, the issue is limiting turnovers. The Horns rank last in turnovers at an average of 20.4 TOs per game. They will be going up against the number one team in steals. A big difference for the Horns in this game is the presence of Chassidy, who had to miss the first game against WVU. Normally, the Horns are better on the offensive boards than most opponents but WVU is outstanding on the offensive boards, topping the league in that category. Limiting second chance shot opportunities for WVU will be key for the Horns to end the regular season with a win. Not much separates these two. WVU does a good job of getting more shot opportunities than their opponents while Texas tends to lean in the other direction. WVU normally fouls more, giving opponents more chances to make FTs. Texas will need to hit their FTs to counter any extra possesions that WVU may come up with by way of turnovers. The Big 12 has outstanding posts and guards. Unlike the first game when WVU ran into a Texas team playing its third league game and relying heavily on freshmen, this game is at the end of the season when Texas has gained experience since then. The question is whether Texas will be able to retain their calm against one of the top pressure teams in the league. Handling ball pressure and hitting outside shots were problems initially when league play started. While turnovers continue to be an issue, the team has improved in handling the first two problem areas. At this point, Texas is playing for pride and to send off their seniors on a winning note.
Just as an FYI oddity, the first shot taken by WVU will be the 1000th FG attempted against Texas in league play this season.
Tuesday’s game will be senior night, honoring Cokie Reed, Nadia Taylor and Kayla Brewer. IIRC, there will be the last Fast Break after the game in the Lone Star room. My info could be wrong though.
