wtf was my tivo doing?

I have the flu (ratfarts!) and can't sleep. So I come downstairs, and my tivo is recording something. I checked, and it was recording paid programming. It didn't show up on the 'now playing' menu, and doesn't show up in the recording history, and certainly isn't in my to do list.

Anyone experience odd recordings in the middle of the night? I guess they'd be hard to see, as you'd have to wake up and see the machine on. If the machine is randomly coming on in the middle of the night, I'm losing various 'keep until space needed' programs and not replacing them with anything...

Does anyone know how to turn this off (DirectTivo)? I know there is no menu option to turn it off but last I heard you could delete the channels it uses, preventing it from recording that stuff overnight. I heard later that it eventually finds another channel to use, though. It's always so annoying to expect there to be a half hour buffer of something (sportscenter, news) only to find dead air.

If you hack your Tivo and get console access, there are some scripts (sc.tcl is one, I think) that (once edited) will eliminate those downloads. Otherwise, you can also set a manual recording to force your unit to create a conflict during that timeframe.

I wouldn't worry about it. Other than being annoying, it doesn't hog disk space.

If you have your Tivo set to record suggestions, but you haven't given very many thumb ratings, it will automatically record paid programming, among other things. My Tivo did this when I first got it, and I've heard of a few others that have. Give paid programming three thumbs down and then delete the program, and it should never come back. Or set the Tivo to not record suggestions.

BTW, it doesn't really eat up disk space normally reserved for your season passes or other recordings. Suggestions are the lowest priority programs and will be the first to be deleted if free space is needed.

Thanks for the replies. I checked (and rechecked) the settings... The unit was NOT set to record suggestions. Additionally, the crap it was recording didn't show up on the what's showing screen. Odd. Oh well, thanks for the replies, and I guess I'll just have to deal with the man thinking I watch paid programming at 4 in the morning.

Look on the bright side, it's only downloading ads it thinks you would be interested in based on your viewing habits.
