WR Derrick Griffin signs w/ Miami

In the article by Michael Preston of SB Nation, he praises Al Golden, coach of the Canes for having acquired the No. 1 unsigned recruit for 2013. What a coup! BTW, for those of you who don't remember, he was an early Aggie commit. Anyway, down at the bottom of the article, he happens to mention what A&M knew all along: that he will not be eligible to enroll at Miami this summer and will have his arrival there delayed by a year or more.

So tell me what's the big deal. Why bother to sign him if they know he doesn't qualify. What am I missing here?

they sign him so that they can have some control over what juco/prep school he goes to in hopes of influencing his choice once he does become eligible.

Looks like Blinn JC is in his future. Wouldn't Miami want him to attend a JC in their neck of the woods. To me Blinn suggests he'll be back on the Aggie radar if he can get his grades up.

If this kid cannot get into Miami or an SEC school I am not sure even Blinn will be of any help.
