WR corp

i have been looking over highlight videos from last year and I realized I really underestimated our WR corp. Quan is a freak at going after the ball. Watching some of the catces he went up and got was awsome. He reminds me of Terry Glen. He may not be a huge target but damn it if the ball is anywhere near him he goes up and gets it. He didn't get the huge numbers last year but hopefully that means teams will not key on him and he can get passes and some serious YAC.

I also am hopeful with our young talent and Shipley getting a good year. Shipley always seems to catch the ball standing still and then run. This may be because he is so fast he gets there before the ball, but either way he can run pretty well when he is healthy.

Not that this babbling is at all coherent but I just wanted to voice my 2 cents. The WRs are better than projected by Phil Steel and company.

I have also heard good things about the new TE Irby, but haven;t seen any video. Anyone with first hand knowledge know what to expect?

We know what we have with Shipley and Quan.

We just need another couple of guys to step up. We only have Payne, Webber, Collins, Kirkendoll, Buckner, Hales, Grant, Hicks, Fitzhenry, Malcolm Williams... did I miss any?

Of the number of guys we have in the wings, I have no worries that one or two of them are going to step forward. Quan and Shipley both will be at worst solid, and I honestly think Cosby could put up some all conference numbers.

Does anybody know much about Brandon Collins? His name has been coming up now for awhile, including last summer.

What's he do well? Is he a hands guy or a speed guy or a balance? I'm curious why he always gets mentioned above many of the other guys on the roster at that position.

I'm mostly looking for a receiver who can be a deep threat and step in at flanker allowing Quan to move back to split end. Webber and Williams seem to be the top two candidates. I like what I have seen from both of them over the past year.

We didn't use deep threats last year with Sweed out, so I'm not ultra-concerned about it this year. I'm far more concerned with who's going to be the go-to hands with Nate Jones gone. And an area of even higher concern should be how often we'll use a TE set and whether or not they can even block.

Cosby really fits the mold of flanker a lot more than split end. Dont you want a big target, ideally a really fast big target, at split end for fade routes? That's why Cosby only got moved outside after Sweed went out.

It seemed to me that Cosby, wherever he lined up, would get separation and, if thrown the ball, would CATCH IT. He might not be a deep threat but at least he could advance the ball.

My thinking was that the traditional Texas offense really utilizes out TE and flanker more than our 'deep threat' big split end. This is why I am hoping that Irby is good enough to be a solid TE. Colt (and Vince) leaned heavily on TEs so I hope that Irby can at least make a decent target. If the split end is good enough to attract the attention of the safties and corners, then Quan could put up staggering numbers underneath. He WILL catch the ball and is fast enough to take a short pass deep.

So will Shipley be healthy/good enough to get that kind of attention and take some deep balls/fades, and is Irby good enough to be the release valve? I personally think that Shipley will be the big man staple, until our Fr studs can get some passes too. I have no idea about Irby.

I saw the article at Orangebloods.com that Hicks didn't "make the grade". I'm assuming that he didn't qualify academically. Does anybody have confirmation or more information?

Quan never played split end. it was always Sweed or Nate Jones the last three years. before them it was Roy. Quan is more suited for flanker.

Malcom Williams will be our split end this year. Quan our flanker with Shipley in the slot. nuff said.

Please confirm with Hicks. This is the first i have heard of this.

Even if Hicks, is not on campus, i dont think we go after Blake. We have enough at WR, and most are underclassman. I personally dont feel Blake will get a ship one way or the other. He is a good player, but we just dont have a need this year at WR. We might only take 1 WR next year. It is the position we are most loaded at.

Really curious about Hicks. Very good athlete.

Confirmed at The Link

Edit- I took the link from another UT website. There it gives you the story, here it takes you to the home page. Exact same link. It shouldn't be hard to find. A quote in the story from his dad said his final grade in algebra lowered his core GPA so that he needed to make a higher score on the ACT. When he failed to do so he became ineligible.

Irby, let's see...

Faster than Jermichael Finley...check.
Bigger than Jermichael Finley...check.
Better attitude than same...check.

I think we have a winner here. I can see him being a fan favorite and a matchup nightmare for defenses as our youth matures a bit and if we have a solid running game to add to the mix. Irby. Remember this name.

Finley played basketball and you could tell as he was able to sky over defenders for those jump balls like going for a rebound and he was able to use his body to create separation or get position. That being said I like Irby in just about every other way. Should be just as quicker, better blocker, possibly more athletic and stronger, great hands.

WR core is going to b stacked. It will be interesting to see which of the young unproven guys step up and how 2 deep sorts itself out. For sure I have heard really good things about Collins and Williams. You add those 2 guys in with Quan and Shipley and I think you have the top 4 there.

Again waiting to see how Webber, Payne, Kirkendoll, Grant, Hales, Buckner fit in.
