Would you take a job w/ no health ins.?

I've been advocating a decoupling of health ins/employer for a while.

Would you take a job that didn't come with a health care plan in today's world?

If not now, What would it take in compensation, to get you to take that scenario?

This is not really a good question because such as step right now means a negative outcome for you 100% of the time unless you are below a certain age group where you can get away with it.

The compensation question is easy, though. You should figure out the net incremental cost of procuring healthcare without an insurance plan backing you and plus the value of the premium subsidy being paid by your employer. That is what you are foregoing and what you need to address to be equal all things considered.

Given the absolutely batshit crazy billing policies on the part of the medical industry and "non-profit" healthcare providers, you really should not be entering into this area without a bunch of a-hole insurance negotiators pushing back and negotiating lower charges.

A benefits package offered by a typical company can be 20-30% or more of your total compensation package. I'd need that to accept not having Health and Welfare insurance with a family of 5.

Completely agree with DFWAg. The hassle of dealing with the insurance companies is not a viable option. Wouldn't look forward to shopping for H&W insurance either.

BOSD,

I think most people (myself included) would take a job without health insurance if they couldn't find one that had health insurance. I think most would also take one if they could obtain insurance through their spouse (depending on the cost of doing that).

I'm in my mid-30s and reasonably healthy. Accordingly, I'd consider a job that didn't provide health insurance so long as it paid enough more to allow me to buy an individual health plan. However, if I was my brother who has congestive heart failure and therefore could never find an individual plan that would cover his condition, I wouldn't consider a job that didn't provide health insurance.

It depends IMO on how you use your health insurance. do you use many doc visits which is what most people have come to think health insurance is, a cheap co pay.

if you do and you or anyone in your family who will be on the insurance have medical conditions that require frequent visits and lots of meds you probaly should look for a company that offers health ins.

But if you and your family are healthy and only do welnexx check ups you can get catastrophic or hospitalization coverage or even a MSA and do just find paying for dr visits on your own

My wife works for a small company that doesn't offer health insurance. She also has medical conditions that insurance companies will not accept on an individual plan. My only choice is to work for a company that provides insurance.

It all depends on your current health situation. If you are healthy, buy an indidual/family policy for yourself. use a deductible plan and it will be better than what you get at work.
