I went to the Bakken oil field in North Dakota twice this year to photograph rigs for a local oil company. I am amazed, blown away actually, by the scale of of what is going on there.
Also, I attended a Williston, ND Chamber of Commerce meeting and met the governor of North Dakota and those people are very, very excited about what oil is doing for them. North Dakota has the lowest unemployment in the nation. People who have been farming for five generations on the same land are becoming millionaires overnight. I doubt you are going to see much opposition from the North Dakotans when it comes to extracting that oil.
Unfortunately, North Dakota's environment IS very fragile and its infrastructure is not absorbing all of the growth very well.
But I think the author of the article is correct in that being energy self-sufficient is huge. Europe will probably never be. They will always be in somebody's hip pocket.
I had no idea that we are producing such a large percentage of the energy that we use these days.
