My heart says Dutch but head says Spain in another 1-0 grind them down and score in the second half game, so I'm going with Spain to lift the Cup Sunday afternoon.
They had one goal against them in group play on a PK. They scored 5 goals in group play and 7 more goals in 3 elimination games. They handled the pressure of facing Brazil and in turn caused the cariocas to unravel. I like Spain's chances, but think I'm being affected by 'recency bias' after seeing them bamboozle the Germans today. Spain has flair, but the Dutch play a sound disruptive defense on one end and put it in the hole on the other. This is an awesome story for a final and I'll be happy for whomever wins their first World Cup Championship.
For the 3rd place game, I'll go out on a limb and pick Uruguay over Germany 2-1.
Germany will be playing on a short 3-day turnaround while Uruguay will have an extra days rest. Germany looked kind of gassed by the second half today. Both teams enjoy the return of a key player, but I think Suarez tips the scale a little more than Mueller for their respective teams. I can also see the Germans being at some risk of taking solace in their youth and looking ahead to the next tournament. On that note, Klose gets the German goal.
After a dominating initial WC performance by CONMEBOL teams, Uruguay is the last one standing and could hold their heads high with a 3rd place win over the imposing Germans to finish the tournament. The reverse is not so compelling as Germany will be challenged to overcome knowing that a record tying Championship escaped them.
I have to go with Spain as the African witch has predicted on Univision. I am really surprised that they got to the final as a sports fan I thought Germany was playing at a higher level. In one game though it really comes down to the match up, strategy and luck.
I want Uruguay to beat Germany now but think Germany will beat them pretty bad 3-1.
Do the teams really care about the third-place game? If they do, I suppose German would be the favorite, although it could be interesting with Suarez back for Uruguay. Seems like Uruguay might be more motivated, Germany has to be down after the loss to Spain.
Netherlands has great speed, and just keeps winning, but Spain controls the ball and puts great pressure on the other goal, and eventually one of the scoring chances works.
Since my record of picking winners sends them to ignomious defeat, I will pick Spain to win it all.
But go Netherlands!
This could be Klose's last hurrah at this level. Hes already over 30, and in 4 years theres no guarantee he will be on the team, so I think he plays for that very reason. Get him a goal just to tie for most all time. If Germany has any motivation in this game, that should be it.
I hope you are right. This year should erase the undeserved moniker of choker from past tournaments for the Dutch. They mostly lost to eventual finalists or champs. Who cares if it was in the 2nd round.
I doubt the Oranje can dominate possession against Spain as they normally do since the Spaniards win possession back better than anyone I've ever seen. But, the Oranje don't need to commit too many in order to attack leaving themselves exposed either. I expect Van Persie to have his best game and the Dutch to get an early goal.
Spain has been amazing in possession, but hasn't been clinical in finishing. That will be the downfall.
the Netherlands wins 2-0 with a late counter to finish it off.
Spain pecks and passes teams to death. They were able to control tempo and exploit Germany's middle without Mueller, which the Dutch won't allow. Dutch are playing full and fit and will stifle Spains midfield ball movement forcing them to switch outside.
Espana will go down a goal early to the Oranje and struggle to equalize. Dutch go up another, with Spain scoring late. Netherlands win this in a classic 2-1 death match.
And so the octopus was right. Again. He needs to used for the World Series, Superbowl and the NBA Finals if he can get just one more game correct tomorrow. So far hes Kodos, or Kang, depending on your disposition.
