Game 1 - S.A. vs Mexico

you would think the announcers would actually know the offsides rule!!!
"A player is in an offside position if he is in his opponents' half of the field and is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the next to last opponent."
the mexican player was past the keeper, who was the next to last defender!!

at the half, but you gotta figure mexico will punch in a couple in the 2nd

Thanks for explaining that to me, I didn't understand why it was offsides.

Normally they don't talk about "next to last defender" and instead just "last defender" but is that because the keeper is normally not upfield of the offensive player?

Home teams dont lost first round matches. I think I read a stat that its never happened. But it may today.

Watching SA keep it together shows the importance of a top flight coach. And I cant help but reflect on Bradley.

johnnym - i only learned it at Euro2008, when italy had a goal disallowed in the same fashion. I was furious, but then someone on Hornfans explained it to me!

For people sitting at home, they need the announcers to be able to explain the rules like that to them i think.

What's more comedic--Mexico's misfires on free headers off of set pieces, or Oscar Perez's circus-like antics in front of Mexico's goal on corner kicks?

There really is no wrong answer.

yeah the horns are absurd. i don't even get it....is it supposed to show support for your team, distract the other team, what exactly? and do people have to blow in them to make this noise? if so, what a waste of breath.

nevermind, found this. The Link

i had one as a kid, it was fun for a few seconds. why any fan would want to spend the game blowing into a horn for no discernible reason is beyond me.

What a cracking goal! Against the run of play, I must say, as that was Bafana Bafana's first quality chance of the day. (OK, enough rhyming.)

Still, that was pure quality. Mexico victimized on the counterattack. If only El Tri could finish ...

This is where mexico has come unglued in the past.
Actions dont meet expectations.
The throat start to constrict.
Someone's emotions get the best of him.

Deserved equalizer there. Hate to see glory go to that douche, Marquez, though. Nice patience on the ball.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Mexico pull ahead.

Home team has still never lost first match.

MX has a much tougher path now.

And my bracket is already shot
