Workout tips?

Recently joined a community center that has full-court basketball and a nice weight room and separate cardio room, but no personal trainers. Membership is only $50 for a married couple for 3 months, so I can't complain.

I mainly got it so I could play basketball out of the 95 degree temperatures. But, the other day I ventured into the weight room and realized I literally hadn't touched a weight in almost 20 years and didn't really know what I should do. I knew how to work the machines, but didn't know what I should concentrate on or how many reps/sets of anything I should do.

I'm 34 and in decent shape from playing a lot of basketball, but definitely not strong. About 5-foot-11, 155 pounds, but not much muscle.

Any tips on a workout routine in the weight room i could keep up 3-4 times a week? At this point in my life, I'm not looking to get buff or train for any sport or anything, would just like to be in better shape

Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't have a lot of weight suggestions, but I think supplementing weights with body-resistance workouts like push-ups, sit-ups, and polymetrics is a good idea....not saying to avoid weights of course.

Are you looking for a routine using machines, free weights, or both?

As for sets and reps, I think you're going to get more than one answer to your question. Some people prefer using heavier weights and lower sets/reps, while others prefer using higher sets/reps and lighter weights. At 5'11" & 155, I'm guessing you don't have a lot of fat on your body. I'd say you'll probably get better results using lower sets/reps and heavier weights (3 sets after a warm-up set with 6-8 reps).

As for resting between sets, again, you'll get more than one answer. I would start by taking one minute of rest and then adjust the amount based on how your body responds.

I could give you my routine, but I think that the Sooner who was using steroids will give you the best answer. I think SINCE 73 is his handle. Anybody doing steroids would know a lot about lifting weights.

The only advice I can offer you is that you need to work all muscle groups equally. Too many people skip out on legs.

I'm 6'1" 175 btw. Just in case you were worried that I'm some kind of internet fatass or something.
