Work boots

I need to purchase a new pair of "work boots" to work in the yard, work on projects. Not "Roper" style boots

What are some boots that you guys recommend?

I use wolverine laceups and love them. They are about 8 years old now and I may replace them next year.

Y'know, Ed, I was just looking @ my Wolvie's tonight when we got home from the rodeo... the heel cap on the R boot is coming un stitched.

Then I looked @ the L boot & it's got about a 1-1/2" split in the leather that matches the heel cap.

I need to go to the Wolverine website & see if they have any kind of warranty on that sort of thing. I got them for Xmas '06, so it's not like they are THAT old... granted, I wear them daily... but still, the tread isn't even totally worn through.

Just ordered a new pair of Georgia boots off the net to replace a pair that I wore nearly every day for at least four years. Mine were neither laceup nor waterproof, but I will vouch for their quality. Wore the leather out, but the synthetic nonskid soles had years of wear left. Best price on the 'net was $99. Since I paid $125 in a store years ago, I would call that reasonable.

It's according to how much you want to spend and how much you will wear the boots.

I have a pair of steel toe Wolverines with shock absorbing soles that I wear when working at ranch and they are great. They are not lace ups so some of the heel support busted but it doesn't cause blisters or cause discomfort. I would recommend them. I also like the comfort of the Dr. Martens but it's been awhile since I tried their work boots.

I probably have a rougher line of work for shoes than 95% of people here, and I swear by Redwing laceups. I go through a pair every 18 months or so, where Wolverines were lasting ~6 months. Redwings run me about $130, the Wolverines about half that last I looked. Twice the price, but they last me over twice as long, so the economics work out.

Granted, you won't be caving, blowing **** up, jackhammering, pouring concrete, running electrical, welding, or walking through water 200' underground in your backyard in all likelihood. I'll bet that the Wolverines would do you just fine.

Thunderhoof, considering that my Woverines cost me about $ 110.00 to $ 125.00 per (lacers, non steel toe), I'd say that's not a bad reference.

For a lace up, waterproof, non-steel toe work boot it is hard to go wrong with Red Wings. I have had good experience with Chippewa, Georgia and Danner lace ups as well. I have had Wolverine, Rocky and Dan Post boots fall apart on me before so I can't recommend them. Wolverine's customer service is pretty good, but Rocky and Dan Post seem to go out of their way to avoid doing the right thing.

If there is a Cavender's in your area, they are selling off the current stock of Carhartt work boots for $59. They are manufactured by Red Wing for Carhartt and retail for about twice that. I can't vouch for the lace-ups but the pull on wedge sole models are top notch.

When I was working in a position that required safety shoes, the Red Wings worked great. Can't say I've used them recently - that was back in '93 last time I needed steel toed shoes. Since then, the Wolverine hikers seem at least as good as any others I've found.

I wear my steel toe Red Wing 4470s when chain sawing and such. Love em. Did the soak in a bathtub breaking in method and they are great. And mesquite thorn proof, which is crucial for me.

I know you don't want ropers, but the Red Wing Pecos Steel Toe is the greatest work book ever created, IMO.

I'm in the oilfield, and I'm on my 4th pair. Use the old ones for yardwork.
