Women rush to IUD's

I'm mostly in the pro-life camp and subscribe to the safe and extremely rare philosophy to abortions. I do hope that whatever new health care plan we roll out provides subsidized contraception. I think it is the smart thing to do for women, since unplanned pregnancies are a substantial reason why many don't achieve their life goals and end up caring for children much earlier than planned and often without husbands...and we know that's a recipe for disaster for the mom, kid and society. I think it could also be a HUGE public policy win for Trump if he made subsidized birth control a major tenant of his health care law. It could go a long way to taking some of the steam out of the liberal spin on the "war on women".

from what I've read the pill runs $10-$50 per month and IUD's about $1000 for the 7 yr variety. We should subsidize these to ensure that the pill is $10/mo for anyone that wants it and the IUD only runs a couple hundred or so. This would be a much better use of our money than all the money spent on welfare and incarceration.

I'd agree but doubt that will happen. Remember how controversial the "contraception mandate" was? I hope I'm wrong but I expect any rules around mandating contraception coverage or even subsidizing it will be rolled back as a an easy sell to ultra-conservatives.

If I understand it correctly low income females always got birth control free or minimal $5.00 a month.

Are you saying we should provide free contraceptives for everybody?

I would suggest that it be offered in this fashion for more than just low income. To my thinking, there is about a 12-15 year window where women really need/want to avoid pregnancy. If we provided $5/mo pill for 15 yrs that would enable a woman to get from 18-33 yrs old and have birth control for $900 out of pocket. IUD's are a little more money over that same time frame but still pretty close . That would be good for all concerned. Under 18, hopefully mom & dad are still on insurance but if not, then make it available there as well.

Abortion is highly undesirable in my view but so is unwanted/unplanned pregnancy.

I don't think anything should ever be free. People treat free stuff like it has no value. There should always at least be a co-pay. And if there are women that truly have a hard time paying the $5/mo then that's where Hollywood can step in and do a go fund me campaign.

The folks that oppose providing preventative birth control need to shut the heck up on this one and make a compromise.

just because they are provided doesn't mean they'll be used. In rare circumstances is cost REALLY the issue. Can't get around the elephant in the room ...

Not to mention the adverse health issues associated with pill-based contraception and the fact that it isn't exactly a 100% solution...

While there have been changes in formulation since I was a kid, the reality is that they still carry health risks to the female.

Personally, I am a big fan of just keeping sperm out of the bedroom...

I've never understood why we go into hysterics about GMOs and hormones in our food, but we're more than happy to pump our teenage daughters full of them through birth control.
