Wold Cup in the USA in 2022?

No way should it go back to Europe before it comes to North America. That's bs. I don't know much about the politics and rules, but it would seem that a continental rotation would be the fairest route.

^^^But that's where the major powers are. If it means the US getting a bid in 2022, I'm fine with that, rather than the bid going to another North American country in 2018. It's bs, but sometimes you have to play the way others want so you can get something your way.

1) They're doing away with the continental rotation. They're going to try to go back to Europe having the event every other time. I think it should be that way considering the majority of the best teams are from there and it is where the best club teams play and it is the continent with the most money, but hey...

2) We could host the thing in 4 different regions on a rotating basis and not use the same stadiums for 20+ years. So yeah, we have the facilities to host a World Cup.

We should host it this time. Just yesterday I heard more reports of escalating crime in the already grotesquely dangerous South Africa. The beatings and killing that will have to go on there to even pretend to make it moderately safe will be pathetic. A black eye on this World Cup.

I love the thought of Africa someday hosting one. This means that the continent will be somewhat stable. It is not at this time.

The US is the backup plan as we have the facilities and then some to host a Copa Mundial. Bail on South Africa now, give us the World Cup in 2010. Then ship it to Canada in 2018. Give it to England in 14. Done.

I forgot about Brasil already being inked.

Mexico, as bad as it is and can be in areas is nothing compared to South Africa. They have a long time to go and deteriorate to get even close to South Africa. It is horrible they got it. I love the thought behind it and the dream of them and their continent getting things together one day (with a lot of consistent and serious help from the rest of the world) but they are not there. They won't be in a couple years either.

It would be great for us to hold it. We have some facilities but nothing compared to those outragious stadiums in
Europe. If all else fails...We build!

While the new ones in Germany and a few other places are posh and very sweet, I think ours have more capacity, don't they? I think our WC was the most profitable. At least it was as of that time, right?

Modern Revisions vs. Capacity

The stadiums we saw for the 2006 World Cup were either new or had been renovated. The standouts were the Berlin & Munich stadiums. That being said...

You can Wikipedia the sizes of those stadiums, but I think average capacity was in the 45K-50K range. Munich & Berlin were bigger and maybe Hamburg, but not much else.

In the USA, we could match them in modern technology in NFL stadiums built in the last 5 to 8 years and still average !75K capacity. Or we could go BIG and hit college campuses and average closer to 90K capacity.

Capacity and timing of our matches is what sets us apart from the rest of the world.

Please...No Australia or other countries in those time zones. I can't handle watching games at 3am anymore. The day I had to go to work after the USA lost to Germany was brutal.

I can say this definitively: South Africa hosting the World Cup in 2010 either isn't going to happen or it is going to be the biggest, most dangerous cluster **** a worldwide sporting event has ever seen. The country doesn't even have enough electricity right now to support its citizens. Can you imagine 100's of thousands of tourists coming and hotels having to suffer through rolling blackouts. The crime rates are going to be in unchartered waters as far as statistics go.

I have family there who have told me that although it was a great idea and would be remarkable for the continent if it was pulled off, the World Cup 2010 has the potential to be a complete disaster, unfortunately.

PS One of the World Cup 'delegations' that came to check out the country after SA had been awarded the event had the entire bus robbed at gun point.

I was really hoping to go to the WC in 2010. Then I found out where it is being held. Ill take my chances on Brazil and wait an extra 4 years.

I like that FIFA and others are trying to help by pumping money into South Africa. But that is not solely what they need. It will take years, maybe even generations to right the ship. To try to do so for a few weeks, ignorning the violations being done to people does not make it a beautiful sport. They need to cut their losses.

If they want to stay committed to the continent, which I think they should, then keep money and programs, aid and development going into there. Work on this for years, prepping it to do it right.

But the poor will still stay poor and the rich get even more rich. You think the poor benefit from the money to be made, no. Many of them won't even sniff service type jobs in restaurants. Those may be hired from out of country with temp. work visa's.

There will be a big social wall built, enforced by over zealous police keeping people away from tourists best they can. The numerous clashes that will happen will be brutal. If this plan makes it through the summer it will be a tragedy.

I have decided that if the Cup does get put in the alternate country, the U.S., I will again go to as many matches as I can. But this time for every game I go to I will donate a hundred bucks or so to an orphanage in South Africa. I know it sounds dumb but it will be me doing what I can to try to help those in need. Besides, that orphanage would not get any coin had it been held in S.A. anyways.

Soccernet . com has a whole shpiel segment on how South Africa is going to have everything ready by October 2009.

First of all, it is supposed to be all ready by the summer of 2009 I think, but that's not for me to argue. Also, that country is an f'ing mess and the segment starts off giving teasers including how great security will be.

Getting the WC here again in 2 years would be awesome. There is NOBODY else who could pull it off like we can:

1. As mentioned above, we have a ton of state-of-the-art NFL stadiums just sitting around doing nothing in the summer.
2. People all over the world love to travel to the US anyway. This is part of the reason '94 was such a success. Our weak dollar would make this a dream vacation for most of the world.
3. Because of #2, we have plenty of infrastructure in place to support large numbers of tourists. Just not an issue for us.

Would be cool. No way am I going to South Africa or Brazil. Looks like I'll be waiting till 2018.

The article does not list the countries, but based on success of professional leagues, existing infrastructure, and how recently they last hosted the tournament, my guess would be England, Spain, and US.

The US may not be as well positioned as other countries because of its much stricter visa standards, which is especially true after 9/11.

Damn you for putting that pin close to my bubble. Oh well, I would travel to either of those countries. But as said a couple of posts ago, no way, no how do I go to South Africa.

I've got a few more pins, unfortunately. The biggest being how fifa would deal with naming rights on stadiums. They don't like to be told what to do (much less frap out with $$). They only had 2 stadiums to deal with in Germany, AOL and Allianz. They would have all stadiums to deal with in the US, except for the Rose Bowl. I really don't think FIFA's corporate partners shell out all that cash so that they can share the glory with Reliant, or Qwest.

Just looking at the 1994 stadiums, I don't think corporate naming deals would be a problem. None of those stadiums are named after companies:

Rose Bowl
Cotton Bowl
Giants Stadium
Stanford Stadium
Soldier Field
Foxboro Stadium
RFK Stadium
Citrus Bowl
Pontiac Silverdome (named after city of Pontiac, Michigan)

Rose Bowl - definitely
Cotton Bowl - not with jerry world on line
Giants Stadium - not with new giants stadium
Stanford Stadium - possibly - better stadium in phoenix and seattle
Soldier Field - more than likely
Foxboro Stadium - now gillette
RFK Stadium - would use fedex field (probable final venue)
Citrus Bowl - no chance
Pontiac Silverdome - ford field

It will be an issue. It just depends how much FIFA would be willing to shell out. They won't have as big a problem in Spain, England, or Germany.
