.wma to .mp3

I checked out Napster's free 30-day offer after the SB last night and downloaded a bunch of stuff. The songs are in some protected .wma format. Anyone know how I can convert this to mp3 so I can import it to iTunes?

as far as i know, there's the rub -- i dont think you can convert protected files from WMA. Check ipodlounge.com, as i'm sure this question is very common, especially today.

I'm hoping i'm wrong b/c i want to take advantage of this too.

BTW, you can always burn the songs onto disc then upload them onto iTunes.

There are always way, maybe not legal ways, but that is the stupidity of the whole legal system, from creators, to voters, to enforcers.

I tried to convert a .wma file to a .mp3 file and received an error that says the .wma file was encrypted and could not be converted. Am I missing a step?

Dunno. I have had success converting WMAs that I ripped using WMP, so I assumed those were encrypted. Maybe they weren't.

I remember seeing a program that would run in the desktop background, and then effectively cache the sound output for any wma's played. Then you could save the output as a .wav, convert to mp3, and burn. Unfortunately you still have to run in real time to use.
