Robinson could well be another one in a long list of 'can't miss' backs who don't pan out. If he were truly a sure fire 5* and #1 back in the nation, he should have stepped in and dominated with the RB situation Texas has. Texas has no elite back who should have held off a super stud. Ingram didn't impress and RoJo is not an elite back as he lacks speed and explosiveness. ( He has enough giddy up as a QB, but a back needs that gear to take it to the house and accelerate through a hole ) YET...I hear RoJo is the impressive back in camp....WTH ??? . SAD. I really hoped Robinson would be like Ricky or Adrian Peterson. I guess Arizona HS football ain't all that....or our coaches are clueless.
I get the talent comments, but the take issue with the whole "like Ricky or Adrian Peterson" thing and "the RB situation Texas has" thing.
The college game is so much different than just 13 years ago when Peterson was featured. Most of his carries were out of an 11 formation with the QB lined up under center. Shotgun was a sure sign of a pass back then, unless it was one of those Darren Sproles style draws. They didn't have the manpower to run a zone read game like VY did.
We're NEVER going to have a RB like Ricky or AD ever again, but not because of the lack of HS studs. It's because teams know that the QB and air game is so much more important than the ground game. We're never going back to a system in which the RB will be the one who carries the team. We tried it in 2016 to hide our defensive flaws and inexperience at QB, and it got us (and Foreman) nowhere.
As for the RB situation, Ingram and Johnson combined for 1500 yards and 14 TDs in a year where Ehlinger set the #2 UT passing yards per game average and ran for 663 yards too. Our situation isn't deep but it's talented. You're hoping that the eye test meets the results on the field, but that's just not the kind of game we play. Expecting a freshman to come in and "dominate" on recruiting ranking alone doesn't tell the whole story. Robinson will be an important part of the offense, but unless he's going to a college that runs over 60 percent of the time, he's never going to be that kind of back. And frankly, the only reasons our ground game didn't get the respect it deserved last year were (1.) Ehlinger pooping himself in games like TCU and ISU, and (2.) Our defense being so mangled that we cranked out the #97 D in the country, which hobbled our #14 offense.
**Edit** forgot to comment on the OP. He looks like a decent runner. Reminds me of Rex Burkhead from Nebraska/Plano. He's not going to get much playing time for us, but if one guy went down to injury, it's nice knowing that a kid who can bounce off defenders and help the others take a breather will be available without dipping into the walk-on pool.
