wiring for overhead light fixture

Our living room does not have an overhead light, but after our 16-month-old pulled down and broke our floor lamp (he's OK, thankfully), my wife is insisting we get a fixed overhead light that he can't reach.

I'm not very comfortable working with that level of wiring; what kind of cost am I looking at for an electrician to come in and set up a new fixture (drill hole, run wires, etc.)?

All depends on how hard it will be to fish the wires. If attic space is above the ceiling it's relatively easy. If it's between floors it could be considerably more difficult.

If creating a new switch, more $. If wiring into an existing switch, I can't imagine being greater than $100.

I wouldn't expect it to be more than $200. Keep in mind that this is a wild-***-guess.

You should be able to get an estimate over the phone.
