Wireless router for DSL???

so about 7 months ago, a friend of mine let me use his D-Link Wireless Router to connect our duplex wirelessly with SBC DSL as our broad-band. at the time, it took a while to finally get it working right but finally got it.

so recently my friend asked if he could have his router back and i gave it back to him. i bought a newer d-link router (they don't have his anymore). DI-524.

so i was hoping it would be as easy and plug-and-play. wrong.

so the original line is going from the wall to the SBC DSL modem. from here i have an ethernet cable going from the modem to the "WAN" input of the wireless router. from there, i have an ethernet cable in the "1" output going from there to my roommate's computer. i have a laptop so i can then hop on wirelessly.

sounds good? wrong. i know this is the way it is supposed to be set up. but the problem is that our computers "see" the internet but we cannot get hooked up. every time we try to view a website it says "the page cannot be displayed".

i don't think it is an SBC software issue b/c we didn't uninstall anything from our previous setup.

i am guessing there is something in the D-Link Setup Wizard that i am doing wrong. what could it be?

any help is appreciated.

Can you "ping" an external website from a command prompt on one of the hooked-up computers? I'd start with a wired connection first - worry about the wireless stuff later. Try "ping

D-lInk sucks ***. I tried for about 2 days to get one of their wireless routers up and running with no luck, even with their tech supports help.

I took it back, bought a Linksys and had all three computers, my Tivo and my Xbox online within about an hour. Linksys may cost a little more, but their products are vastly superior.

i'm guessing that your dsl connection uses PPPoE to connnect. the router setup page has provisions for this. sbc web page probably has some info on this.

i'm using the same router and it's worked great.

i returned the d-link during lunch and bought a linksys. in 10 minutes i had the network up & running and back to work. unbelievable. i hate d-link. i did pay $30 more for the same 54mbs speed (it was $10 more + d-link had a $20 rebate) but well worth the $30. i worked on the thing last night for hours & hours and could not get it up and running.
