Wireless remote thermometer

I bought this last week and used it for the first time this weekend. It worked great. Basically, you have a meat probe and a smoker probe that connect to a transmitter. This transmitter communicates up to 100ft to a receiver which shows you real-time the temp of the meat probe and smoker where you put your meat. I was impressed. Considering the last time I smoked a bird, I was messing around too much opening up the smoker to see what the internal temp of the bird was, this was worth it to me.

When doing an overnight cook it is nice to be able to set your alarm range for the cooking chamber and catch some snooze time. The Maverick ET73 is not a whole lot more expensive than units that don't have remotes or remote units that only have one probe. Good purchase. Glad you didn't waste your money on an inferior product, because you probably would have ended up upgrading to this one eventually.

Be sure to place the cooking chamber probe as close to your meat (not that meat silly) as possible to get an accurate reading. If you have a horizontal offset put it between the firebox and the meat. If you have a vertical, just make sure to have it on the lowest shelf where meat is. If you have a temp gauge mounted on top of the cooking chamber, where most are for some ill-conceived reason, you will be surprised to see how different the actual temps are at the cooking level. I know one guy that recalibrated his top mounted gauge to that of a grate level gauge to attempt to achieve a more realistic reading.

Sometimes when you turn on the Mavericks the remote doesn't read the base unit even in close range. If that happens, just turn them both off and try again until it works.
