Wireless meat thermometer

Weber and others are selling a wireless meat thermometer. You stick the probe in the meat (on the grill or in the smoker), turn on the base unit and take the remote unit with you. When the temperature reaches the heat you have chosen, the remote unit sounds an alarm.

This sounds good to me if it works. I can go upstairs and get beer, chips, plates or whatever and the wireless unit clipped on my belt will let me know when the meat is ready.

Have you ever used one of these gadgets?

Yeah, they work if you get a good one.

There was one recommended on this board a while back that I wanted to look into getting, but I couldn't find the post again, so hopefully the same person will post it again.

The one that was posted had 2 probes. One for the meat, and one for just the smoking chamber.

You could set the alarm to go off when the meat probe reaches a certain temperature. You can also set alarms to go off if the smoking chamber gets either too hot OR too cold.

Anyway, I wanted to look into that one, but I could never find the post again with the search feature....

Idon't know if one is made, but you need one that you can read the temperature of the meat from the wireless unit.

If your meat has reached a certain temp anf the fire is not getting it any hotter, you may never reach your target temp and the wreless reciever you described does no good. So, you still have to walk out to where the grill is to check it.

You may be thinking of Maverick brand. I have one of those. It works pretty well, but the range is not something you could expect to walk around with as a pager; Mine tends to drop connections if over 15 yds or so, and works better with direct line-of-sight (window). There may be better units, but it was pretty cheap when I bought it, and is still very useful even with limited range.

I like the idea of not needing to snake a wire all around to get the probe into my meat(s) properly.

As mentioned elsewhere, I have the Bandera (New Braunfels) & it's got a square stack @ the top center of the smokebox... that's usually where I snake the stainless cable through.

I'd be just as happy to keep the base unit within 10' of the smoker...

Anyone got a price range for either unit?

Google or Froogle "Maverick ET-73". Price should be around 40 bucks. For more in-depth discussion of wireless thermometers, check out a bbq forum like virtualweberbullet.com.

I have a Maverick Redi-Chek that works great. You can get models for smokers or grills. Seperate probes for meat and chamber temps and you can set both min and max for both. The range is just fine - with the smoker in the backyard I set it and go on upstairs to bed and it works great. I highly recommend it.
