Window Air Conditioning Units

We're remodeling a little house for a friend of mine to rent. We're thinking about getting a couple of units, one for the bedroom and another for the rest of the house. The bedroom is only about 165 sq. ft. The rest of the house is about 500-550 sq. ft. A friend of mine has a Fedders unit that's 5 years old and still chills the hell out of his room on the Low setting.

At Walmart, they have a 6,000 btu unit for $124 with remote control. Would that be enough for the bedroom? The other one they have is a 12,000 btu for $238 also with remote. That'd be for the rest of the house.

Do y'all think those would be sufficient? Is there another brand that's better? It's hard to beat the prices from Walmart. I'm in Austin, so it will be getting hot.

Thanks for any help.

I also forgot to say that the rest of the house has no separating walls. It's an open area in a sort of L shape. The 2 bedroom walls are the only ones in the place.

I went through this last summer. Go to Sears. Great warranties and the people help you figure out the exact btu's needed for which room. They have energy star ones too that may get you a nice rebate from the city. I got two small ones for a total of 300 bucks and over half of that came back to me via rebates. I save on electricity too.

Fedders are a great unit though. If it works, go for it. But it may not be efficient but if a unit does not have to be bought, forget that for now. But I really trust Sears

Be careful you don't buy too much AC unit for a room though. There is a formula that I don't recall to figure out how many btu's needed. Also, ceiling fans are a must. Keeps it cooler for less money.

My units have timers to turn on and off, remote and also energy saver mode along w/ the standard features. I hardly know they are on they are so quiet. PM me if you have more specific questions....amigo.

Hey, thanks for all that info. For some stupid reason, I hadn't even thought of Sears. I saw a chart at Home Depot tonight that must've used that formula. Said a 150 sq. ft. room would need 5,250 btu or something close to that. I figured 6,000 btu would be best for that extra 15 sq. ft. as well as the bathroom (which is not calculated into the 165 ft).

We will have 2 ceiling fans. As well as an abudnace of oscilating and/or box fans if we need them.

I'll definitely look into those Sears units if we can save on electricity bills and get rebates. Thanks for the heads up.

Another thing. If you are buying the ceiling fans new, get Hunter. I will not ever have anything but a Hunter. Hampton Bay is okay and all but I really have had better experience w/ Hunter.

When you go to Sears and if you get one there, make sure to ask for the rebate forms or call Austin Energy to find out when they start up the rebates if they are not going now. You can borrow my extra one in the mean time if you have to in order to tide you over till the rebates. They are the way to go.

I guess you could check out the website for Austin Energy too.
