I have an older computer that i am giving my 3 year old nephew but it always freezes up and gives errors. It has WIN ME and i was wanting to load win xp. I have an OS reinstallation cd and i was going to try to load that on the computer because 1) WIN ME sucks and 2)i dont have the reinstall cds for ME. So what i am asking is how the hell do i do this?

I would start by reformatting your hard drive. This will completely wipe out everything on your hard drive, and allow for a cleaner installation. So before you do this, back up any personal data/programs you want to keep (Word documents, music files, Favorites folder, anything you want to keep.)

Once your HDD is reformatting, place your XP CD in the cd drive and reboot. Your computer should boot from the cd and begin the installation of Windows XP automatically.

IIRC, XP has a feature that prohibits it from being installed on multiple machines (I think you have to activate it thru Microsoft once it's installed). Just so you know... in case you've already used the cd to install XP on another machine.

Transferring an XP product key from one computer to another is easy. Automated process, took five minutes on the phone.

Not sure if your existing installation of XP will stop working if you transfer the product key, but if it's already activated, my guess would be it shouldn't.

Not sure if you will experience this problem, but I did the XP over ME upgrade for a friend .... SNARSH !!!

Best wipe the hard drive clean - and install XP fresh.
