With AMC and HBO doing some great shows...are the economics there for TV to produce another truly amazing Western like Lonesome Dove?
From a creative standpoint the big strength a mini-series has over a feature film, or even a trilogy, is flexibility which works great for epics, like Lonesome Dove. The big negatives were always TV budgets and production values. But now the gap in production value between TV and movies are narrowing. Mad Men, Game of Thrones, hell even FNL looks great on TV.
In the end, I guess greatness comes down story. What made LD great was that it wasn't an outlaw gunfighting story. Like all McMurtry stories, it was about relationships between people and the hopes that motivate them. Maybe TV just doesn't see the economics behind those kinds of projects.
