It would not shock me. But then, this is not his first political rodeo, as it was for Satan Williams.

I'm not defending thier leadership, but when I've encountered presidential contenders in the past, including both Bushes., James Baker, John McCain, both Clintons and Barak Obama, I've thought to myself "This person is smart and impressive."
Familiarity has since bred contempt for all of those figures save James Baker. I guess it's too late for me to get a fresh look at Rick Perry. But I just can't imagine a worldly person encountering him at a rally or giving a speech and thinking "Wow -- this guy is amazing."

Nah, Perry will end up being the Republican John Edwards. I don't know if his scandal will be sexual, but evidence of his corrpution is starting to bubble to the surface.

This is just a guess, but I think he will be seen as a slick and sleazy operator with nice hair, just like Edwards.

For what its worth, I always thought Edwards was sleazy, and was vindicated. Thus, based upon a sample size of one, my predictions are 100% correct.

Yeah, I would not be surprised. Plenty of smoke, and since there's an 'R' by his name, the press will dig to find out more.

Like his politics or not, if there's one thing that Perry knows how to do it's stay on message...

He's run for office 9 times and won each one. What makes you think that NOW he'll have a brain fart?

Again, I'm not endorsing Perry - I'm really VERY lukewarm on his candidacy...But, I can at least realize the reality of his political skills...

The press in Texas is not particularly aggressive and likes to play like an insider. Read Paul Burka for examples. No reporter likes to cut off his access to insiders by getting out of line and so they just go along.

Perry vetoed a bunch of bills after the legislature adjourned during his first tour. He had not told the legislature he had any problems with the bills while they were in session and could cure them to his satisfaction. The usual reason for such a tactic is pleasing some faction that likes to make campaign contributions. The press mentioned it and moved on.

That kind of nice treatment will not be the standard on the national stage. I think he is nuts to be making this run. Obama was not ready for the big time and neither is Perry.

We need a chief executive who knows the congress and the congressmen and can knock heads and forge compromises. We haven't had anybody like that since Ford and Nixon and, to a lesser extent, Bush I.

Perry won in 2010 by over 10%. By 10% in 2006 even though that Repbulican lady ran as independent . Won by almost 20% in 2002.

I would say those are pretty good to above average margins.
Definately not squeakers. I do have to say that the Democrats have not put up a strong candidate in quite awhile. Perry has a solid machine and they are different then the traditional political campaign.

Please don't confuse me with a die hard Perry supporter, I don't have anything against him.

When people in certain circles gasp and point and yell "gaffe," they don't really get it.

Not that Gov. Perry advocated secession, but his comments in response to a question about secession in April of 2009 caused KBH and her team to high five one another and declare themselves the victor in the GOP primary. Little did they know. Perry's numbers shot up, and Perry eventually cruised to victory by 20+ points, avoiding a runoff.

The recent Bernanke stuff-- same deal. Sure, he didn't actually say Bernanke was "almost treasonous" (he said printing more money for political reasons would be), and, sure, a lot of Washington insiders gasped and pointed and exclaimed "gaffe!" and declared his brand-new candidacy over. But those experts were clueless. Perry's poll numbers rose.

I'd bet against a Clayton Williams style gaffe from Perry.

What sleazy business deals and corporate welfare are you talking about......I keep hearing people say this but then nothing?

I know about he vacinnation deal, bad move with a well intentioned meaning. I don't think money was the driving factor, especially if you know anyone that has had ovarian cancer and had her ovaries ripped out before she could have children.

I agree with Republican strategist Mike Murphy about the GOP frontrunner:

Mike Murphy: “Listening to Perry try to a put a complicated policy sentence together is like watching a chimp play with a locked suitcase.”

Satchel: I had to laugh at that one. I used to think of Perry and I'd hear the "Wizard of Oz" lyricks "if I only had a brain" playing. I don't underestimate him any more, though. Decisions and initiatives that from a policy standpoint are hard to defend are astute politically. The things that come to mind first are the costitutional amendment in Texas the prevents even civil unions for gays, vetoing legislation that would have precluded execution of the mentally retarded and Perry's continual push for teaching of "creation science" are all moves calculated to win favor and energize a base that loves and supports him with energy and dollars.

The economy is not doing well. So if Tony Stewart is not driving his race car very well, we should just replace him with Will Ferrell? Obama might not be an economic genius, but at least he can talk about complicated economic issues and not sound like a doofus. Not everybody that sounds smart is smart but when you're an experienced public official and sound dumb on an issue it's probably because you don't know much about it.

I am impressed with the large number of people who are saying they were supposed to be on that very trip on an untested submersible.
Even more than said they were at last aggy game that beat the Horns
