"That leaves one big question for a possibly presidential Perry: If he has to call lawmakers back again for TWIA anyway, what's the political price of vetoing SB 1 — which also includes the state's school finance plan — to take another swipe at Amazon and the Otto amendment?"

wouldn't this make Perry look like the idiot he really is, if he vetoed this bill? -specifically vetoing a school finance bill.

Would we even have school start on time?

Obviously Perry cares not one whit how smart he looks to polical moderates. He governs for the fire breathing conservative. As far as a veto, Perry is damned unpredictable. He always has been.

Whether he vetoes it or not remains to be seen, though one thing is certain: he will not bother to read it either way.

I suppose that I'd qualify as a "fire breathing conservative" but Perry doesn't get me too excited.

Compared to what we have in Washington he looks like a freaking genius though. Scary.

All you guys who constantly cried foul when Bush was brought into discussions that had nothing to do with him really need to take a dose of your own medicine.

On a thread about Perry, Texas, and school finance we've now seen Obama (implicitly by Oilfield), Pelosi, and healthcare brought up.

If it was wrong then, isn't it wrong now?

Johnny, if I wanted to compare Obama to Perry I would have. Unfoturnately I think they're both opportunistic pieces of excrement, so I see no purpose. However, I will at least give Perry some credit for recognizing that we have a budget deficit that requires some cutting. No one in power in Washington seems to be able to come to grips with this so far.

You're right Oilfield, I'm sorry. You compared him to "Washington" and since he's perhaps running for Obama's office, I found that as an implicit comparison to Obama. Sorry if you meant it differently, my bad.

My point regarding bringing in completely unrelated persons is still valid though, even if I over-reached on what you said.

However, I will at least give Perry some credit for recognizing that we have a budget deficit that requires some cutting.

It's easy to balance a budget when you don't have a choice. Would Rick Fairy support big spending cuts if he could simply deficit spend every year? I'm not so cure.

State with highest % of uninsured in healthcare system. This guy should run for President or something. Seriously, how great would our country be then.

our education system sucks and i do not think this spending bill cuts much at all so what is the issue. the more we spend it seems like the worse things get.

WHY would anyone think Perry would veto it?
He called them back into session to pass this bill

With the passage of SB 1, the 2012-2013 budget will provide $1.6 billion more directly to our public schools than the 2010-2011 budget, from $27.6 billion in the current biennium to $29.2 billion for 2012-13. This amounts to a 5.6 percent increase in state funding for education from the previous budget. This hasn't passed the Senate as far as I know.

All the people crying that more money isn't sent from the state to schools would be better served to go to their school districts and demand accountability and wiser use of funds.

As one example DISD wastes millions onexpensive catered lunches for meetings and millions on sending people out of town to 4 star hotels for more meetings.. Think Dallas ISD is the only corrupt school district in the state?

It is also important to remember that the budget in SB1 is more than 50% higher than the public education budget of 04-05.

Perry won't veto it.

On another note, since you brought health insurance into this thread on education I will ask you,
Who are these people that are' uninsured"?
What did Perry do to make all these people uninsured?
Do you have a credible source that shows the uninsured?

One last question'
Are you saying these people do have have health care? It is not the same as health insurance you know

did you read my post? I'm asking the question because the Tribune is suggesting that he might, because of something obscure.

I was just throwing that out. The session ends today, I think.

Thank you. That is the link I was hoping you would post.

Here, from your link
"Who Are the Uninsured in Texas?

The uninsured are a diverse group that includes people who cannot afford private health insurance; who work in small businesses that do not offer insurance; who simply choose not to purchase health insurance, even though they can afford it; who are eligible-but not enrolled-in government sponsored programs such as Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Plan (CHIP); and recent immigrants.

According to a summary of national data by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), groups with a high likelihood of lacking health insurance include:
•People in families with income below 200 percent of the poverty level;
•Hispanics;
•Young adults, age 19 to 34;
•People in families in which the adults worked either part-time or only part of the year; or
•Individuals in fair or poor health status who are significantly more likely than others to be uninsured for longer periods."

before we get on a high horse and worked up perhaps we can take out those who choose NOT to get insurance and those who qualify for CHIPS or Medicaid but haven't signed up for it.

The state spends money advertising these programs in English and Spanish.

and the other question should be who needs healthCARE and has been turned down to receive healthCARE?

Now back to public education. Apparently SB1 passed. SB1 's public education budget is MORE than the last public education budget.

Should it be more? Of course it would be nice but To have increased it any in the times we all are in while cutting all other areas does suggest the Lege understands how important it is.
Now if all ISD's will look at ther spending and cut out crap while concentrating on actual education that would be great until things get better.
