Will fans still sing The Eyes post-game even if its banned?

Interesting question
If the University decides not to play it the people in the band would have no choice if they wanted to stay in the band
Shouldn't they also ban the Star Spangled Banner? In 1812 America it was legal to own slaves as it was legal in most of the entire world.

There are still fans singing "make 'em eat SHEET!" in the fight song. I hear it occasionally at games. But you generally can't tell. If the band doesn't lead "the Eyes" at the end of the game, it will eventually go away too.

Soon the fight song will be changed again to "Give 'em Hell! Give 'em Hell! Black lives matter!"

Don't be too surprised if the NCAA and the Big XII in their combined wisdom decide to get into the act (see NCAA, SEC, and Mississippi).
In my mind, that comparison is apples and peanuts. The confederate flag was the battle flag for traitors to the United States who fought to dismantle the Union.

How in the world The Eyes could be viewed in the same universe as the flag that symbolized the cause of slavers, traitors and those who would fracture the UNION escapes me. What a few students did a hundred years ago, which as I understand it, had nothing to do with official school policy, or with establishing or underpinning the actions or purposes of the confederate states into University policy. I could be ill informed of the original sorry event's purpose. I am under the impression it was a spontaneous action of a few students. Maybe someone should enlighten me.

And I agree with you, Caryhorn. My fear is that there are people out there who can't/won't make the distinction that you did (which is spot on).

A more apt comparison would be the Volkswagen Beetle which was introduced in 1930s Germany ... it would be absolutely ridiculous to equate owning/driving a VW Beetle these days with supporting the German regime of that time. There is nothing remotely racist in the music or lyrics of The Eyes. And I'm not aware of any of my classmates singing it with the intent of promoting white supremacy (and I can't even believe I'm typing that); the original intent of the song was to satirize a phrase that the UT President was using at the time. Its introduction at a minstrel show was most unfortunate.

Calling the many people that were fighting on the Confederate states of America side, the many people living in the south, including many Texans, my ancestors “traitors” is pure bull s—-. If that were the case, why would the US government (with taxpayer money) allow statues etc to be erected ALL over the country for over a 100 years?

History is being erased and rewritten by a small mob rule.

What should we call them instead? Betrayers? Turncoats? Apostates? Judas-es? Snakes in the grass?

"I think we should change the school song."
:soapbox:

"I think I'll declare war against my own country."
Not a traitor at all! Build a statue!

Was George Washington a traitor for trying to dismantle the British Empire?

Was Sam Houston a traitor for trying to dismantle Mexico?

The South was not trying to overthrow the U.S. government, they were trying to declare independence just like George Washington and Sam Houston.

My loyalty is to God, my family and friends, then Texas, and then to the U.S. If Texas were ever to secede again, even if I did not agree with Texas, I would choose Texas over the U.S. Federal Government.

Robert E. Lee is the perfect example. He did not want to fight for the South. He did not support slavery. He agonized over who to fight for when Lincoln offered him command of the Union forces and he ultimately decided he could not make war on his family or countrymen of Virginia. People also do not realize that had Lincoln let South Carolina and the other deep South states secede, Virginia likely would have stayed in the Union. Virginia only joined the South after the War started because they believed in a state's right to secede and they did not want northern troops marching through Virginia to infringe on such right.

Other than the results of war and violence, secession is a very open question. To this day, it is not banned under the Constitution. You'll notice the northern states still did not ban it by amendment after the civil war. It is clear under our federal system, before the civil war, the founding fathers intended to federal government and states to be co-sovereigns. If you polled the founding fathers and Americans themselves prior to 1861, you would have a very mixed answers on whether states had the right to secede, although I would guess the states' right of secession would get over 50% of such a poll.

However, back to my main point, I have no family that has ever lived in the North. All of my ancestors lived in Virginia, South Carolina, Louisiana or Texas. The history of the North is not my history or the history of my people. Being from San Antonio, I have more in common with Mexican culture than I do the maple drinkers up in New Hampshire. I do know that northerners/yankees look down on and despise Texas and the South. They vote against the South and have politically suppressed the south in various ways. When was the last time we had a conservative, white southern supreme court justice? Nixon tried to appoint one and the north would not allow it. As a white, conservative southerner, no matter how great of a lawyer I was, I know that I would NEVER be allowed to be on the Supreme Court. In short, I do not consider yankees, specifically white ones, to be my brothers or countrymen.

If I were to ever side with them over my family or state, I would be a disloyal traitor to my fellow Texans. Why on God's green earth would I ever side with THEIR government over Texas?

I question the morals and priorities of anyone who would betray their family and friends and the place they live to side with a federal government of people from thousands of miles away.

77,

Your posts makes two things very clear:

1) You are one of those people who thinks the TRUTH is relevant and should be considered

2) You flunked "Revisionist History", as well as the course about how to use it to get your way.

Joe,

I have never left a game early, always stay through the singing. Most people around me sing even louder to drowned me out because I can't carry a tune in a tow sack I shall continue to "encourage" others.

I have always felt that not singing with/to the players is the ultimate insult to them. If they quit during the game or act out, my standing with Horns Up in silence is a possibility.

:hookem2:
WINNER, WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!!!

Fine-If you don’t sing the Eyes of Texas you have to run bleachers in the heat for an hour. Too bad Frank Medina’s gone!

My sense is that fans will indeed start singing "The Eyes of Texas" on their own at the conclusion of all games, home or away, no matter what the players, head coach, AD, school President, Board of Regents or ESPN/LHN say. I am just speculating here, but my best guess is that if fans are ordered not to sing, then they will sing even louder. And yet even louder again if its a night game.

So I wonder, assuming my prediction is correct, what will the various parties in opposition to "The Eyes of Texas" do about it?
Maybe they would just pipe in even louder music over the PA system to drown the singing out? ("M A.A.d City" by Kendrick Lamar might be the perfect song for that, just for the irony). Could this actually happen? Would a school, our school, try to stop its own graduates and fans from the long-held tradition of singing the school's 100-year old fight song after a football game?

How will the woke fans respond? Will they "boo" the school song? (Maybe they already do?) Will they start fights over it? Could fights break out in our own stadium, among our own fans, after a home game victory -- putting some literal fight into the fight song!!!? That would really be something.

How will the players respond? Will they turn their backs on The Eyes and walk away? Might they even go so far as showing the "horns down" like a bunch of aggies or land thieves? Maybe some players would join in the singing while others walked away with their feelings hurt? If so, how big of split might that cause within team dynamics?
If they try to drown out THE EYES, you PROTEST that by NOT SHOWING UP the next game... and NOT selling your tickets to someone else... A near EMPTY stadium and lost concessions after each time they try to squelch OUR freedom expression sends a loud message !!!!!! The silent majority can not be silent anymore !!!!!!!!!

It would be impossible to get the whole stadium to sing it together. People in your immediate vicinity could hear you sing, but that's it.

Even if 100% of the stadium is singing at roughly the same time, they'd start the song at different times, sing at different tempos, and sing in different keys. You probably couldn't even tell anyone was singing at all; it would blend into a mish-mash of crowd noise. It would sound and look like everyone was cheering and throwing up the horns, both of which would be expected after any game.

With that being the case, I don't think anyone would care whether anyone was singing or not.
******** !!! We do just fine at baseball regionals where school songs aren't done..A little more difficult with more people but it would work ok.....It may not be perfect but it would work !!!!!!!!

I dont know if that is possible but would definitely send a message.
Tough call for the AD too as he has a new part of the stadium opening in 2021 that he has tied himself to.
Meanwhile, Korn, Ferry waits patiently for our phone call

If the band isn't allowed to lead it, a single cheerleader walking out on the field after the game, throwing up the Horns, and start the singing. Seattle you're in charge of getting that done.

Who volunteers to unplug the jumbotron?

If the people at the top decide to not have the EYES played a cheerleader who did that would be removed.
With social media it would be easy to organize fans doing it.

So, are you guys saying that if the University caves to these demands, i.e. banning of TEoT, you're still going to the games and by extension supporting these players? This is where it gets dicey for me. Depending upon how the University responds to these demands, I'm either not supporting specific players, or I'm completely cutting ties with UT.

When your country is right and your state is wrong.

Benedict Arnold is most famous with siding with his country over his state. There will always be Hanoi Janes and Benedict Arnolds I suppose...

If UT keeps the Eyes of Texas and gets rid of all of the troublemakers, I am back on board.

If UT keeps the Eyes of Texas and keeps Herman, Mitchell, Eagles, Sterns and any other ringleaders, I will be indifferent and not attending games until all of them are gone. However, once Herman and the problem players are gone, assuming UT has not gotten worse, I can get back on board.

If UT gets rid of the Eyes of Texas, I am out altogether.

My sentiments exactly with the possible exception of Herman. I need to re-read his comments and hopefully gather additional details from other sources to better determine how much his influence may have directly contributed to the actions of these players.

77,

I am going to see first hand what happens and what doesn't happen. TV, ESPN, fish wrap, other media will slant their reporting, and leave out most of what I want to know.

I have been given some assurances about a few things that are important to me. While I have let my opinion of Herman be known, as well as my choice of the next HC, we may or may not be in disagreement on that, but Herman can't leave soon enough for me. He's a damn foreigner and needs to be the new HC at UCLA. If he wins the National Championship, I will still want him gone.

I shall also be in Dallas, with or without the State Fair. Who plays football, who plays "games", who quits that day or before will determine whether I am in Austin or attend the Bedlam game.
