Why we should have gone all out for Shepard

we all know how good he is as an athlete and that he seems like a really great kid. we all know gilbert is probably the most polished QB we can possibly get. the 'x' factor is how much recruiting can a guy like Shep do for guys like McFarland and Loston. would having Gilbert be better than having Shepard AND McFarland? how about Shepard AND McFarland AND Loston. i'm not suggesting that Shep is that much of a pull, and kids hopefully will figure out what's best for themselves, but losing McFarland would be a big concern (Loston was never a UT guy anyways, and neither was Lipscomb, though Blake is still a possibility). hopefully the depth chart, and mamma factor win out in the end for McFarland and UT, because we need that guy.

I think MacFarland will go to school where he wants to go. I am sure that a guy that he has known for a month, and was not offered as a QB by UT, is not going to sway him that much, hopefully.

McFarland has been @ OU on his own dime the past 3 days.
I think it's going to be a battle for anyone to land him.
Hope it watches how the season plays out before making a decision (unless it's OU)

So I guess he gets the Adiran Peterson "test drive" then for the duration of his visit, not to extend past weeks.

He returned Ketch's call.
I don't know if the guy is visiting because he was about to pull the trigger for Texas or LSU or whatever but any kid who has stayed longer than the usual weekend trip & on his own dime during Pro Day @ OU probably has an interest more than the others would like to think.
Can't hurt he was surrounded by all of the current & past #1 players at their respected position from Texas during his stay.

since, and how do you know who returned who's call?

The tone of your post is inflammatory. He can play with alot of #1 players too.

Care to make a bet on this one?

back to ur main point.

i do not think it is wise to sign X player so player Y will come to ur school. McFarland can come and play with great players in Austin, get a great education, get great coaching that cares for him as a person, grow as a player and as a man and get into the NFL (assuming he is good enough). Hopefully he can see all the benefits that UT has to offer and why Texas is one of the top places to play and live in america. UT is truly a school where you can get everything you want, lifestyle, education, sports, great people, weather, outdoor activities, parties, frats, food, lakes, etc.

He is a great HS talent and hopefully he makes the right choice for him. He knows that the coaching and talent in Austin is great. Hopefully he will want to be part of that regardless of what someone else thinks. There is a reason that RS is going to LSU and not UT. Mack is honest and Less may or may not be. I have my views on how he runs his program.

i believe we should have gone after RS as someone who can get a shot at QB and if he is good and can improve there, great, if not play another position that can both help him get to the NFL and help the team. I dont believe in lying to him just to get him to come to UT. IF he believes Lsu will let him play QB and not switch positions and he wants to only play QB great, he has found a school for himself. Also, it might be that Mack promissed GG that he will not recruit another QB to come to UT. While i am not a fan of that strategy either, if that is what Mack did than i am glad he, like always, keeps his word. RS should go to the best school for him as should JM. I see UT being clearly the best fit for JM, i just hope he has the same glasses i have. He can always borrow my glasses.

The way I look at it....if a guy really wants to play for UT then he will come here if offered. RS was offered and he choose to go somewhere else. I want these guys that shake Mack's hand regardless of the depth chart.

Shepard's influence on other recruits is the most tired, over exaggerated raionale for signing someone that I have ever heard. He's met JM exactly twice! It's just not the case.

The guys you are talking about are studs that want their share of the lime light. They are going to go where they want, regardless of where RS ends up.

Let it go.

good discussion.

i'm not saying that we should offer shepard just so he can help recruit other guys like mcfarland. RS has his own merits on why he deserves a scholarship and a trial at qb. on the other hand, having a guy like him would be a great thing to have on the recruiting trail. i don't know how it's going to work out for LSU, but had he been a horn, his enthusiasm for the program would have been a very effective recruiting tool imho.

as for McFarland.. clearly he's his own man and will make the best decision for him. he is priority #1 for us, and any little advantage in recruiting him helps. as for McFarland visiting OU... i'm sure at OU, former #1 DT recruit Granger is giving great advice on how to not get caught shoplifting

From orangebloods war room....

A few notes from my conversation with five-star defensive tackle Jamarkus McFarland …

The blue-chip defender maintains that he’s got Texas, OU and LSU dead even on the top of his list, but he did confirm that his mom has a school that’s standing out in her mind.

“I’ve been receiving letters (from Texas), keeping in contact through email and they continue to write. I call and my mom keeps in contact. She’s liking it here (OU) a little bit but she really likes Texas because of their academics and stuff. And it’s my home state,” McFarland.

McFarland, who has chosen to scale back on the phone calls he’s taking, said his mother has kept in contact with some of the coaching staffs, and it sounds like the conversations with the Texas staff are again standing out.

“She takes a lot of calls and talks to a lot of the coaches. She's really close with those (UT) a little bit more,” said McFarland.

Mack Brown and Mac McWhorter are the two main points of contact for Texas, although McFarland said he receives letters from every coach on the Texas staff. One thing he’s continuing to look at is the cities that house all three of his favorites, as he’s really conscious of finding a place that suits him away from football.

“I look at it like Oklahoma's town is smaller than Texas’s and LSU’s but those two are in the capital of the state, so it’s going to bigger. Texas is like a first love because it’s a home state. So our eyes are open on Texas.” (JS)

So, 73 can't spin recruiting news. JM's own words.

Thanks for the post. A lot of good things in there. Hope he makes the best decision for himself and that hopefully is Austin. I have been through Norman, and lived in Baton Rouge for 11 years and of course Austin.
Even assuming that i have a biased opinion, i have friends that have been to all 3 cities that also do not have ties to any of the 3 schools. Austin is clearly the best of the 3 cities. UT education is clearly the best of the 3. All 3 are top football programs currently.
Common down JM!

RS made a good decision to go to LSU. I think we did go all out for him, but come on, we have too many qb's on the roster and Russell is not just going to step in and dominate and be a step ahead of Harris, much less Chiles and Colt. He can't pass as well as Kinne either. I know he's talented and has more of an upside than all of these guys, but the staff was honest with him when they said playing qb will be an uphill climb.

I predict we'll be having this conversation again next Dec when RS's senior highlight video is posted on rivals. With more than a hint of regret.

And recruiting is changing. You will see a prospect like this every couple of years. Chiles was the last one and UT landed him by telling him they would give him a shot at QB. And they have done that. You can't bring in a top dual threat QB every other year. We hit on Chiles but missed on RS. I am ok with that. Chiles is a badass.

If I'm gonna fixate on a player, it's one that likes us well enough to verbal to us, no matter who else is recruited at a particular position.

This isn't to slam RS...by all accounts, he's a stand up guy, as well as a terrific player. However, he knew Texas wanted him, just as he allegedly always wanted to play here. Mack apparently wouldn't give him the assurance he wanted about his chances at quarterback here. Mack shoots straight with recruits. What kind of sweet nothings LSU whispered to him is between him and them, but he opted to verbal to LSU. Good luck to him in Baton Rouge, whatever position he ultimately plays.

RS can try to recruit others to go over with him, but I have a feeling most will choose based on what school they think is best, not what RS thinks is best necessarily.

The Gilbert verbal sits very well with me, and in fact, he might have as much or more pull with the few remaining targets we have than RS has. After all, Gilbert backed up his desire to play for Texas by giving us a verbal. I'm gonna watch Gilbert's senior year with a lot more interest than I am RS's...and I doubt I'll spend a minute regretting that RS didn't choose the Horns. Baton Rouge or Austin...that's some tough choice...

"package deals" are always hyped, but rarely materialize. Kids seem to do what they think is best for them, rightly so.

We do not need 2 QB's in this class. If you read Shepard's quotes after visiting, even Mack let him know this.

We have 4 DT's on scholarship. We already have a top rated QB verbal. We do not need him. End of story.

Anyone who assumes that Shepard is going to walk onto LSU's campus and immediately become the starting QB is kidding himself.

Perrilloux and his handlers made the same assumption, and look how that ended up.

Jarrett Lee is not going to be easy for Shepard or anyone else to supplant.

Shepard has elected to go to LSU, good luck to him there except if we play the Tigers.

I disagree with the notion of going "all out" for Shepard (or any other player) just because he's uber talented. Shepard apparently wanted a guarantee that he could compete for the QB position, even though we already had a commitment from top-rated Gilbert. Suppose Shepard told Mack "I don't care what position you play me at, but I want you to guarantee me that I'll be the team captain" or "I want you to promise me that my family gets 4 box seats to every home game". Would anyone still want to go "all out" to sign him then? Anytime a recruit asks a coach to make a promise, that becomes a potential liability to both the team and the coach. If Shepard (or any other recruit, whether they be a 5-star or a 3-star player) insists on something that Mack isn't comfortable promising, then that should be the end of the discussion. There's nothing wrong, of course, with a recruit asking for something that he really wants, but if we can't give it, then "thanks and best of luck" to him.

As Spock said in 'Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan'... "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one."
