Why Texas may have finally turned a corner.....

As somebody that has been following college football now for 30 years closely, I have noticed all universities and athletic departments or should I say football programs have a certain culture. They change with time, depending on the athletic director and president of the university. I am familiar with all the sins of Oklahoma’s past, and have also felt that the university of Texas had a bit of an arrogant image about their past. I think Texas had to do a little bit of cheating in order to compete within the Southeastern conference. But that’s another story. Today I think both programs are very clean and something to be proud of. I am biased in that I grew up wrestling overseas with Jason Leonard, who is the head of compliance at the University of Oklahoma

I think Sark is an outstanding hire. I don’t care about peoples past win/loss records, I look at other factors. I like to watch him on the sidelines interacting with his players. Playcalling. How he dealswith the media. He handled the situation at USC as properly as one could considering the circumstances. Better than Eddie sutton did at Oklahoma State.I think he’s perfect for Texas. I just never thought Texas would humble themselves enough to go after the best coach instead of going after someone they thought had the correct image. I do not think urban Meyer would have been a good fit. He handled his alcoholism like a man. Didn’t keep it a secret. Stuff like that can make you a better human being and Coach.

Anyhow, I’ve always liked him. Of course you should know, I thought Tom H was going to be a great coach also, so what the hell do I know.

Hatred for OU aside, college football is better when Texas and OU are good, I still want OU to lose every game but that doesn’t change fact that everything is better about college football when both programs push each other to be better.

Nice post, but I take exception to one point. The little cheating Texas did was because of the wholesale cheating by Oklahoma, SMU, and Texas A&M. Imagine if Eric Dickerson had not received a TransAm from A&M or the enormous amount of money by SMU. Would he have gone to Texas? Who knows? But if so, how many wins and NCs might we have by now?

Everette,

After one meeting with Dickerson, I refused to go back. He later became my poster boy for why recruits did not want to go to SMU. We actually worked together with OU to keep recruits from going to Highland Park.

My secretary knew what to type when I told her I needed 3-4 "Dickerson letters".

SMU was the only undefeated team in America, yet was NEVER ranked #1

SMU played before 20,000 as the SWC Champions in The Cotton Bowl, because NOBDY CARED

Dickerson was arguably the best RB in the country, yet on a the only undefeated team, couldn't win the Hype$man.

Do you want to go to SMU and be forgotten, play before nobody, or do you want to have your talent show cased on the national stage?

Just to remind everyone what has pissed Dickerson off to this day is he was told "go to Texas and win the Heisman or go to SMU and win squat". He blames Texas for all of his stupidness.

So he was really a aggy?

He likely would have if Meyer hadn't shown up at A&M with an ultimatum that Dickerson "was his", and if the Aggies stopped him, he had a huge file to take to the NCAA. Then he demanded the keys to the TransAm.

Whether or not SMU indeed had two suitcases put in the back of the TransAM has never be confirmed , although there is a guy that used to live in West Houston who swears he delivered the car and suitcases to Sealy. FWIW, I've never believed him.

And Texas and OU should play the Huskers every dang year.

Don't you have a parcel of land to go steal or something?

Kidding. Good post. Hope you are right. At least being competitive with OU would be nice again.

We have always been competitive with OU during the last 7-8 years, just 2-3 bone head decisions from the coaching staff prevented us from winning.

So, in the last 9 games combined, we were outscored by 16 total points with all games close.

That was through the Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Jalen Hurts eras.
