If you're talking about the rioting in Belgrade, there were at least half a dozen major Western nations whose embassies got attacked. They're not just mad at us. They're mad at everybody, pretty much business as usual for the Balkans.

Don't underestimate how much the Russians are using this to tell the Americans (& NATO), don't even think about recognizing Chechnya.

This "uprising" has the backing of the Serb government and Moscow.

the Serbian Prime minister said today the USa is to blame for the trouble in the Balkans.
Certainly our embassy was the only attackied until today. if others have been I have not seen it .
The prime minister said the USa MUST denounce Kosovo' independence.

exactly right Russia is fanning the fires. How ironic is it that we are backing a muslim nation at the same time we are hated by most other muslim nations?

There assumption whether rightly or wrongly that when crap happens one of three countries four countires are pulling the strings. i.e. Israel, USA, Russia, or UK....

In this case the assumption would be the UK and/or USA.

In '96 I was terribly conflicted about what was going on. The slaughter of Albanian Muslims was awful. Europe's failure to own the problem and insistence on dumping it in our lap was maddening. There was no good solution. A friend of mine in Russia got so pissed at me for my conflicted position that I never heard from her again. The Russians were emotional about it. They probably still are.

We're seen as the leader of this, primarily because the airplanes that bombed them nine years ago had "USAF" and "United States Navy" stenciled on the wings.

Nobody hates the EU, because the EU is too weak to deserve anyone's enmity. The EU let the Balkans descend into chaos for half a century before we stepped in and did something about it. And to the extent they ever took any action, it was with American encouragement and military backing.

Personally, I don't care whether Kosovo is independent or not. I have to congratulate the Kosovars on creating a spectacularly ugly flag. But outside of that, it has no real bearing on my life. But for Serbia, it is akin to having foreign powers bomb the United States until we were too weak to keep Virginia from seceding. We might be pissed too. And I suspect we'd be pissed at the foreign power that did most of the bombing.
