Why is an expired driver's license not a valid ID?

If a picture ID is required and it has my picture and my birth date, and my address on it, why does it cease to be a valid ID when it's no longer valid for driving? Why must it be "current"?

If the concern is that someone gave it to me because they got theirs renewed, then I have to ask, "Does the picture look like me, *****?"

I'm still pissed about everybody not accepting my Illinois drivers license. Every bar or HEB always throws a damn hissy fit when they see an out of state license, even when I still have 3 expired TX DL along with it. Yah, its an out of state license, it looks legit, it is legit, deal with it and stop trying to tell me its a fake.

I'll trump that. My passport (valid) has been denied by both exxon and valero when I try to purchase smokes. That should trump a dl any day.

A passport totally does, especially on W-2's. That's your tax document at work, right? That IS column A or it's own column. You don't need a SS card, a license or even a birth certificate, just the passport. Trumps all.

It is very possible that an expired DL has been altered. Many just toss them without cutting them up or they toss them in a drawer and forget about them.

Just go and get a Texas ID. It looks just like a DL but it is only an ID and never expires.

I had someone tell me that my Military ID wasn't valid and I needed to present a valid state ID.

Uh...really?

A business has the right to refuse service to anyone for no good reason...you are pointing your frustration in the wrong direction. This all has to do with TABC's rules and regulations.

It's also probable that you aren't pretty enough for their club, and they see it as a legitimate way to keep your ugly *** from stinking up the joint.

hope you realize I'm just messin with ya

"you can place this blame 100% on the TABC. "

TABC tells bank employees not to accept an expired DL? And please don't take my remarks as a defense of TABC, because I'm convinced that all of their "agents" are scumbag POS.

No they don't tell me its a fake but I'm pretty positive thats what they think since a lot of kids with fake ID's use out of state so the bouncer doesn't know the security features on it. HEB cashiers always have to call the manager over and get out a book with info on each states DL to match it up with mine, even when I pull out my 16,17,and 18 year old licenses from TX.

Just to clarify a misnomer amongst young bartenders and the general public.

There is no TABC rule that says that bartenders can only accept a valid Texas DL as a form of ID. There is actually no TABC Law, or any law that states that bartenders must even check ID's. The only law in this regard is that bartenders cannot serve people under 21. Where the confusion sets in is that TABC will only recognize a valid Texas ID as proof of age.

What this means is that if a bartender serves an underage person, but they checked that persons ID, and it was a valid Texas ID, and the agent decides that the photo was close enough in appearance to the person presenting it, the bartender will not be in trouble. If the bartender doesn't check any ID and the person is underage, he will be in the same amount of trouble as if he had checked ANY ID and served the person.

The problem comes from TABC classes, bar/restaurant rules and misinformation that says that bartenders MUST check ID and the only ID that they can accept is a valid Texas ID.

If a bartender looks at you and determines that you are old enough, he does not have to ID you. Or if you present another form of ID that shows you are of age. In either case, the ONLY way that bartender can get in trouble with TABC law, is if you end up being underage. He can, however, get in trouble with his boss if his boss sets a policy about ID's.

I got turned down twice with my expired ID, BUT I had the paper receipt showing It had been renewed. Of course this was in New Mexico. Most places in New MExico have the barcode scanners to make sure it's legit.

Those paper "temporary licenses" were cool. I had a friend who had the template for the Texas temporary license saved as a Word document. Good enough to print and take to bars along with the UT ID.

TABC and state law are at issue. As noted, out of state ID/DLs and passports are sources that the TABC will not countenance, which is to say, if you check and the ID looks good and says the holder is of majority age, if it is from Texas, even if the holder is a minor (not the person in the photo) you, as bartender, are in the clear. If it is a passport or an out of state license, no coverage. So many places take a 'why take a chance' attitude. The TABC is practically a rogue element.

Meanwhile, I am not certain that a passport does trump all. If you get pulled over by a cop I don't think a passport is going to cut it.

To follow the above post:

As a bar tender I don't care how old you are. Does anyone really think i want to spend time checking IDs? It's my *** if I serve an underaged person. I need to go home to my family rather than spend time in jail and money on attorney's fees because some welp wants to party with the big boys. Period. So, if it looks suspicious, I check. It takes a handful of seconds. I cannot understand why people get up in arms about getting carded. The expiration of your license is of no interest to me other than the effect it has on law enforcement. It is not a good license, and therefore I am not protected if I make an error in 'judgement.' As you might guess, errors are what the cheaters are trying to force. They try to look older, use IDs that look like themselves, etc. Women try to look younger no matter what, so you just can't tell. If it really bothers you to be tossed for an invalid ID get up off of *** and get a new one. I have taken hundreds of expired IDs because I trust the eyeballs. Then again, I card hundreds and about 10% of my calls turn out to be considerably off.

Most common reason reported for failure to get a new one after expiry: 'I have a warrant.' That builds confidence.

TABC shot someone about a week ago. In a parking lot. Why these goons are allowed to carry firearms is beyond me. ******* gestapo for the MADD warriors, etc. I have to admit that, if you allow it, people will drink well beyond their capacity. I also have to admit that, in the chase for dollars, bar tenders will serve those people until they practically drop. Not a rule, but it happens. Unfortunately, the TABC helps nothing. Fucktards.

I 100% agree. You have an expired license so a bartender doesn't want to risk serving you. You a few beers. Or the Bartender does serve you, turns out your a minor, he looses his job instantly, probably will have pretty hard time finding a new job, and the bar he was at gets to pay a pretty hefty fine.

It seems kinda selfish you to compain about people wanting to "go by the book" when you don't want to stand in line for an hour once every five years to get a valid id. BTW: do you drive at all?
