Why do people like 'distressed' furniture

I went to the furniture store the other day and probably more than half of it had the distressed look. The look where it is purposefully mared, beaten or painted to where it looks old. Personally if Im paying for a new piece of furniture, I want something that looks new. I guess it is all a matter of personal preference, but I cant understand the attraction to distressed furniture.

that way when they save it, it makes them feel good........

Badump Bump......

I will be here all week, make sure to tip your servers......

I'm with you; I don't get it. It cracks me up to think of the guy whose job it is to beat up the newly made furniture with nails, rocks, etc.

Are you talking the white french country? Or something else? One advantage of it is that you can get different pieces and so long as they are all basically distressed whitewash, they look pretty good together.

So when your little kid (or drunk friends) gouges it with the sharp point of a compass or slams it with a hammer, it doesn't look messed up.

I thought everybody knew this.

I'm not sure about buying a distressed furniture piece but I've taken older pieces of worn out furniture and distressed it to update the look rather than replace it entirely. I have purchased "distresed" picture frames to match the furniture.

I also moved into a house built in the late 70's and didn't like the worn out dark oak look of the bathroom cabinets so my wife and I painted/distressed those too as a way to extend the life of them until we remodel the bathrooms.

There was an interview w/ Switzer years ago when he was having his house built somewhere in Dallas I assume when he was coaching the Cowboys (to a World Championship

) & he said they had probably 3 or 4 people in his kitchen w/ chains slapping it against the cabinets & on the counter tops & he walks in & yells at them, "wtf are you guys doing?!!"
They had to explain to him that the distressed look was in style.
