Why do blue laws still exist?

I am heading to Lake Austin on a friend of mine's boat and I somehow ran out of beer in cans. I have some Shiner bottles and XX bottles but I don't like taking glass to pools or the lake. I called up my buddy and fortunately he is running late. I would like to make a run to buy some beer now but I have to wait another 30 minutes b/c you can't buy beer until noon on Sundays. What a stupid law.

there is no rational basis for blue laws. i would donate tons of time and money towards any effort to end them.

there is no logic, other than religion-based ones to even reach to apply to this. and of course, that "logic" has no place in my government.

The laws are silly. And ironically, the only time that I've ever really tried to buy beer before noon on a Sunday is on Easter when we are cooking up enough lamb to feed a couple hundred people at church. Can't do work like that without a couple'a six cold ones. The first year we had to send a runner down to the convenience store at noon. Now the priest leaves the fridge stocked with a couple 12s for us the night before.

I do worry about someone who thinks they need to be drinking at 9:00 AM in the morning. But that isn't a religious sentiment, more a "I dislike drunks" sentiment. It would be okay with me to extend the limitation to every day.

The entire state of South Carolina is dry from midnight Saturday till 8am on Monday. Imagine living in a place like that.

We had a discussion about this on the lake. I know that on the Guadalupe River it is illegal to drink beer in public (even in ares zoned to allow it) before noon on Sundays in public. Is this a state-wide law or just a county/city ordinance?

Much support actually comes from the people in the trades themselves.
If you make comfortable living as a mid-level manager in car sales or running a liquor store, do you really want to add eight to 11 hours to your workweek and come in on Sunday? Do you want to add the expense of having the dealership/store staffed when you wouldn't do enough additional business to justify it?

What he said.

Liquor store owners don't want to open on Sudays and car salesmen like having one day off a weekend.

As far as not buying beer/wine until noon on Sunday, that's just collateral damage from the above.

In Bergen County, NJ, you can't sell clothing, appliances, or furniture on Sundays, but alcohol is okay. Paramus in Bergen County has additional laws which pretty much restrict the sale of everything except groceries on Sunday.

poor businesses worried about competition determining how they need to run their businesses. please government...HELP!

also, with banks, there must be certain, set hours of operation for financial institutions, so that the markets operate with structure. closing bell/after hours trades/foreign market investment, etc.

i just want to buy beer.

Accurate Horn is absolutely correct. The reason is the Baptist lobby in the state.
