Why are they not renovating Yankee Stadium???

I watched the special on espn on Yankee Stadium tonight and it makes me wonder, why don't they renovate the place? Over 3 years, redo it like we have Memorial Stadium. They called Yankee Stadium the greatest stadium in the world based on the history... but they are closing the place down. Makes no sense.

I have been there for a Yankees game once about 4 years ago. The stadium needs serious help but they could have done it and they have the $$$ to do it.

I agree that they need a new one, because the current Yankee stadium barely resembles the one from years past.

This one does...

I have been to Yankee Stadium and Wrigley Field. Honestly both are dumps. What I loved about Wrigley, however, was the ambiance outside the stadium. Wrigleyville and Murphys. I went to the area around Yankee Stadium (Stan's maybe?) and was unimpressed at least compared to Wrigley.

If you don't like the souvenir / memorabilia shops around Yankee Stadium, we will just have to agree to disagree.

They are allsome, imo.

went to Yankee stadium within the week, and was impressed by what was beneath it (how the corridors, etc, were) more than the stadium itself---not like Wrigley, by any means--but still, to see the GROUNDS where Gerhig made his speech, where the Colts beat the Giants in '58, etc made it that more special--just glad I got to go there before it was demolished--BTW, Shea is a dump!!( to put it nicely) but their new stadium looks allsome!!

look at the scoreboard in that pic posted by trueut...I remember some yankee brass checking out godzillatron...but are they really going to have that thing in centerfield??? how can that not be distracting to the hitter?

One more reason for building a new one...According to the most recent CBA signed by MLB owners and the MLB Players Union, stadium construction costs can be deducted from the amount a team would owe to the rest of the league due to the luxury tax...so with the yankees payroll currently at $200 million plus, they can take that extra money that they would be paying other teams and put it into their own stadium...

so its essentially a free stadium to them? or is there a cap on the amount that can be diverted from luxury tax to a stadium project?

I've never been to Yankee Stadium so I decided to take the plunge- just bought Red Sox/Yankees tickets for the series in August (last series between the two teams in Yankee Stadium). Arguably the greatest rivalry in baseball, I can only imagine how electric the atmosphere is going to be.....and both teams are playing well of late to boot. I can't wait.

My wife and I made our first (and last) pilgrimage to Yankee Stadium early this year against the Devil Rays. It was a life changing experience.

However, it had nothing to do with the stadium. I thought I would have a special feeling like the first time I walked up to Wrigley, but I didn't. The stadium can be replaced and it looks like the new one is going to be better than the first. I am usually against the tear down of historical buildings, but this thing has been bastardized through the years with terrible "upgrades".

The posters that said the Yankees built Yankee Stadium are 100% correct. The history, uniform, players, fans, and mystique have made Yankee Stadium.
