Who's the leader?

I like Pat Summitt - if someone at the top had to lose early, oh how I wish it had been Geno!! In Pat's comments after the game, she talked about Angie and another player (name escapes me) having to be the
leaders of the Vols next season implying that lack of leadership was a factor this year.

I think the leadership issue has been something of a problem for Texas
since Jamie Carey left - a player who is willing to challenge her teammates, push them, encourage them, etc. This quality seems to me to be something you have or don't have - who will be that
player for Texas next year????

I think that player might be Font. I can see Coach G developing her into a player just like Lindsey Harding. That would be totally awesome!!!

A lot of times it depends on if the player has the personality to be a leader, to be able to "get" in a teammates face if need be. Not every player can do that.

that is a great question. i definitely think we were lacking a leader this season. Jamie Carey was a great leader. the most successful teams have a solid point guard who is the floor leader. they should be an extension of the coach...understanding what the coach wants to accomplish, and doing whatever it takes to get it done on the court. essentially they are a coach on the floor.

Erika and Britt will be the seniors next year, but i would like to see AT step up into a leadership role. i think she gets it and i think she has what it takes to lead the team.

Thinking about Jamie made me smile……my youngest daughter is now in college, but she was young enough to work as a shorthorn while Jamie was at Texas. As such she was often close to the Texas pre-game team huddle. From her accounts Jamie was sometimes so intense she seemed to intimidate her own teammates – you really didn’t want to think about a slow start or pacing yourself with her around….much like with DJ on the men’s side I don’t think she was completely appreciated until she was gone and the difference became obvious.

Another for whom I have some hope in this regard is AG. I sit close to the Texas bench and I often saw freshman AG yelling at upperclassmen during timeouts. Given that it all seemed to be done in a positive manner I thought that was a good sign for the future…..But, the way it works is that you have to be able to bring it on the court before anyone really listens to you. I see potential on the court and with intangibles for AG. We’ll see what she does with the opportunity.

We need for the point guard to be the team leader and I think Font has what it takes. It will be interesting to see what the freshmen bring and we may be surprised by the leadership of one of the incoming players.

I agree that in a perfect world the point guard is the leader. AT may be that point guard of the future and she may be the leader. But, I also believe that in a perfect world there is more than one player providing leadership. Also in a perfect world the leader(s) would be an upperclassman. It just doesn’t always work out that way. You would hope that at least some leadership would come from Brit, EA, and/or Kat. But, some people just do not have that in their nature. That doesn’t make them bad people or bad basketball players. I don’t know these players personalities well enough to predict what will happen. What is certain is that there is an opportunity for at least one to step up and fill that role – and how well that role is filled will go a long way toward determining the success this team will enjoy next season.

I think this is still a team in transition and it is more likely to have underclassmen fill that role than would normally be the case…..I had the feeling at times this past season – just a feeling, not based on any facts – that with the underclassmen being normal underclassmen, and the seniors still being in only their second season with this coaching staff, that no one really felt like it was their team to lead. I could be completely wrong about that. But, to me it that was what it looked like.

Thank you for the ideas . . . we don't get to actually "see" many of the games. Though the game is on the tv schedule, when the appointed time arrives, "Fishing in the Northwest" has been inserted in the wbb slot. Nothing quite as gripping as televised fishing. Anyway, it is hard to access the demeanor of the players with so little data. Sounds like Font is the front runner . . . we'll see!

I think that AT has what it takes to be a leader. Talking about Jamie Carey's leadership made me smile, too. I also remember the story the team told about Edwina Brown's Senior year trip to the Big 12 Tournament. She got on the bus (to the airport) and told her teammates that if they weren't there to win the tournment, to get off the bus. That was the year Texas became the first team in the Big 12 to have to play the first day and yet get to the Championship game. They lost in that Championship Game, but their success in the tournament carried them into the NCAA tournament. And Winkie had done it all with a broken finger she didn't tell anyone about. She had gotten it broken in a pick up game with some guys at the gym. There's a leader for you.

Edwina knew how to put a team on her back. She had the skills to back it up. It is hard to be a leader if you can't also perform and I think Font is the most capable of leading the team because she can handle the rock and run the show. Her tears after the game prove to me that she has the passion. Passion combined with skill is a beautiful thing.

Erika Arriaran has the same basketball smarts as Jamie Carey had (has)....they are both polished scholars of the game....

However, since she can't physically be on the floor for very long, and since a Point Guard is a more logical choice, I think AT would be the front-runner...

Whatever, WORK OUT HARD, HORNS!!

I was expecting Brit to set the tone for the team this season. I really liked seeing what Ashleigh brought to the team. She's the best ball handler and creator on the team, imo. If practice and working out will change what happened, I expect she will be leading the charge. I think that she and Kat will be among the leaders. All of them are hard workers, but leadership is different. It will come from our soon to no longer be freshmen, I think.

Interesting. I am very serious and not be argumentative or be anit-Erika when I ask what that is based on. I cannot say that I see the same basketball IQ that Jamie had by any of the current players. Hopefully Erika will be healthy enough her senior year to really show her stuff.

I have heard Coach G say that Erika has great court vision and excellent knowledge of the game and is an excellent passer. She also says she's the best pure shooter she has ever coached. I watched some videos of Erika as a senior in HS and her court vision and passing ability was unmatched. I've seen flashes of that in college, it is there, but I also see Erika pressing too much - trying too hard, and getting very frustrated. You can see it on her face and body language. Sometimes, knowledge and BB IQ does not translate well to the game in real time. I think if she could relax and let the game come to her, she would do so well.
