Who's On The 2008 Dave Campbell Cover???

Good for them. I'll try and get him to sign it when we're there Nov. 1st.

When was last time Tech was on the cover? I remember Donnie Anderson, who gained a whopping 54 yards against Texas in 3 Varsity games. Maybe this cover has the same type of results.

Seems like Rodney Allison and/or Billy Joe Tolliver may have also made the cover.

I'll have to apologize to Spike when I see him, since he sits with T Jones in our section a few games each year.

I sense that the Tech Nation is really starting to get nervous about all the preseason touting. You would expect our friends from the South Plains to be pounding their chests and talking a lot of trash this summer. But they are oddly quiet. They are afraid, I believe, of jinxing things. Or they're just not as confident as the pundits.

So whenever I encounter a Tech fan/grad, I immediately say "Man....EVERYONE is saying you guys are just gonna roll up on the Big 12 this year, huh? You must be really excited! This is really your year. All the stars are aligned, and the conference is yours for the taking! Ten returning starters on offense! How can you possibly lose this year? I mean, if ever there was a year that Tech is going to rule the Big XII, this is it, huh?"

The reactions are getting better and better every time. I predict that by Aug 31, 2008, the entire Tech fan base (and hopefully team) is going to be wound up so tight with nervous fear that they will stumble early, and then crater. I advise you all to employ the same strategy. It's a lot of fun.

Their natural place in this world is as a snake lying in the weeds, not as the program with the bullseye on its back. Even their fans and alums can't stand being the preseason fav.

I think most Tech fans are excited yet humble about the upcoming season. Tech happens to be the media darling this preseason for a change. This is a very solid Tech squad but it still has some serious question marks such as run defense, having any resemblance of a running game, and winning on the road.
Personally I think this is probably a 2-3 loss team.

At any rate, there is nothing wrong with Tech having a little spotlight put on them. Ultimately it makes UT and the Big 12 look all that much stronger in the long run. UT will return to the spotlight soon enough.

UT/Tech analogy for golf fans

From the ESPN GameDay broadcast when we played Tech a few years ago..

Texas Fans chant: "Tech plays High Schools"

Tech Fans reply: "And we win!"

Some Tech fans actually yelled that as a reply. Arrrrsome!

Ironically, 1977 was the last time the pre-season hype was this high for the Red Raiders. We had enjoyed a 10-2 season and a conference co-championship with Houston in 1976, and we began the 1977 season ranked and with Rodney Allison as a projected Heisman contender. Alas, his leg was broken early in 1977 at Jones Stadium against the Ags, and the season went south quickly. It's taken us 31 years to get back!

You Horns are accustomed to the hype. We are not.

Plus ... we are acutely aware of the gargantuan task it is to face Big XII teams eight times annually. Not meaning to be patronizing here, but ... playing in the South Division, UT and OU have assisted us in staying humble.

People still care about Dave Campbell's Texas Football? I stopped buying that thing when it cost in the single digits. With internet and everything else, especially the coverage of high schools in the broader media, that magazine, at $13 a pop (or whatever ridiculous price it is now), is irrelevant, IMO
