Few detest Perry more than I do, but I don't see how this goes anywhere. Even though I opposed the veto of the PIU funding, he had every right to do it, and I don't think the fact that he also had called on Lehmberg to resign makes his veto a criminal act. Furthermore, the Austin Court of Appeals has shown that it will reverse the PIU's convictions even if they have merit. (See Tom DeLay.) The main thing this does is make Lehmberg look like a vindictive *****.

These indictments will make a big difference in Perry running for President, Vol. Most thinking Americans will not vote for anyone who has been indicted on two felony charges regardless of the eventual outcome.

As Willie and Dandy Don would say, "Turn out the lights...."

Deez, while he does have the authority to line-item veto the funding, his mistake and the illegal action was the coercion ("she goes or no funds for you"). That's blatantly illegal for a public official. He could have vetoed the PIU funds without that pressure, then explained why after that, but he didn't. That's the basis of the charge and why I believe he will be found guilty.

Larry, this all goes back to the PIU's investigation of the Cancer Research and Prevention Institute of Texas CPRIT in 2012:

"The Dallas Morning News reported last month (Nov 2012) that more than $13 million in CPRIT funds went to companies run by Dallas businessman David Shanahan after he and several of his associates contributed $90,000 to the campaigns of Gov. Rick Perry and Lt. Gov David Dewhurst."

I believe that Perry not only needed to protect his donors who received poorly vetted but quickly approved millions of funds, but also to cover his ***. Lehmberg's DUI was his opportunity.

Living in Austin, we saw plenty of newspaper and tv reports from Perry people demanding that she quit to save PIU funding:

I think he's through scamming the people of Texas.

I also believe that Greg Abbott's sphincter tightened up quite a bit last night after this news.

I get that there is enough evidence to bring him to trial, but that doesn't necessarily mean there is enough to convict him. I hope there is. There is very little that would make me more happy than seeing him wearing an orange jumpsuit.

I love that we all get to pay for small government Ricks lawyer bills. I guess we will just put it on the tab with the mansion he was living in.

Meso... your contribution makes me think we might discover and understand the constitution of Dark Matter before we ever begin to even start to possibly, sorta maybe, kinda almost think we might even barely hardly conceivably even get close to the bottom of all political goings on.

I saw Gov. Perry give a strong performanceduring an extended interview with Channel 4, the Fox affiliate in Dallas. He answered some pretty tough questions and never said anything that sounded stupid. (Not necessarily a high bar for a big state governor, but a significant one for Perry.)

He made the case (with the help of Channel 4 who had footage of the arrested Lehmberg and the horrifying contempt with which she treated police) that he was simply doing what was in his power to force the resignation of a person clearly unfit as a prosecutorial leader.

He did some fear mongering, but used real facts in justifying his decision to send national guard to the border. I still think sending in the national guard is a poor use of money. If there is a mechanism (maybe there is not) to use state money to pay local law enforcement to work overtime, it would be 10 times more effective, since you would be using personnel who know the turf, have arrest authority and are trained in policing.

I don't know, Murph, orange is the new black!
He would look good in orange!!!
He will be very popular with all the boys there!

I read somewhere that there's a special exemption in the law over funding that explicitly allows for executive action, in this case, a veto. Wish i had a link to it, but it didn't sound to me like Perry did anything criminally wrong.

Bayerite, the indictment of Perry is not for vetoing anything it is for threatening the veto if Lehmbergh didn't resign. It is truly a farce.

So what actual law did Perry break? Also, who is the group suing Perry? Don't they work for a certain DA? Also, didn't the suit follow the defunding? There are several logical problems with the way you frame the circumstance.
