Who Should We Play Since Arky Won't Play Us in 09?

I wouldn't mind seeing us take on Tulane in the Superdome in 2009 with a home date with them as schedules permit. Their schedule is already pretty salty though, so I doubt Toledo would agree to that. More than that, however, I'd like to see us schedule something with another high profile opponent (not that Arky was that high profile). I like the Ole Miss & UCLA high profile OOC games from the perspective of a fan coming up in 2010-2014. I'd like to see us schedule Notre Dame, Michigan, tOSU, UGA, Florida, or Alabama - even if for 2015-2016. More than anything I'd like to schedule a home and away with LSU while Les is still there. LSU's scheduler really wants to get something going with us as well and would trade games as necessary to get us in '09. Who would y'all want to see and why?

Nobody that is 'elite' is going to be open to putting us on this late. Get ready for a 7th home game against the likes of someone in the Sun-Belt conference.

Fresno, Boise, Hawaii.

Good enough to make it a game, and programs that like to play the big boys. Although I imagine Hawaii ain't too happy with us on the scheduling front.

I'd like to play those blue-collar boys from Fresno.

My guess is that Hawaii will slide back into mediocrity pretty quickly now that Jones has left for greener pastures. Fresno and Boise St are capable of giving us a game, as they live for the chance of upsetting BCS schools and have both done it on occasion.

How about Hawaii in Hawaii in 2009. This couldn't hurt our recruiting since players would know they would spend a little time in Hawaii. Who knows. Maybe even convince a few of them to wait on the NFL draft for that trip.

Since this was supposed to be a road game, I wonder if Deloss will want to keep it a road game. Anyway, here are a couple of teams I think might be an OK fit (though I haven't checked any of these teams' schedules):

Arizona - Pac 10 team. Better than a Sun Belt team, but not really a team we should have to worry about. Could get some decent exposure out there if we played them in Tucson.

Georgia Tech - ACC team. We have superior talent. Good HS talent in Georgia.

Pitt - Big East team. Like the others, we should roll them. Good HS talent in PA.

Do we have two OOC games we now need to schedule or just one? I think a road game will or could happen because Mack has said in the past he likes to get one road game under the belt before OU. As the schedule currently is, we have UCF, UTEP and CU at home before OU. Why not move UCF and UTEP around and get those games under our belt and then get a road game before CU and OU. Minnesota is opening a new stadium in '09 - we could travel up there and then get a home with them later on. LSU's schedule in '09 still has an opening for a high-profile opponent as well. Of course it is tough to travel to Baton Rouge, but we would def. be road tough after that one to start conference play. I'm not sure who else actually has availability...but, don't be so quick to dismiss a road game...it might very well be just what Mack is looking for. Of course the Ath. Dept. wants another home game, but let's think beyond just the revenues and what better prepares our team for conference play. Worst case - I don't think a road loss early on to a top 5 team would knock us out of the national championship.

i don't want a crappy team from a crappy conference.

Penn State
Florida State
South Carolina
Va Tech
USC
ND
Oregon

Of course, none of those teams would want us to come to their place that early in the year...

PuddleCruiser is right. That game will be played in Austin and if that means a glorified scrimmage versus a school with a directional name and State and the end so be it.

There are many options that would be good. I agree with many of you in that it would absolutely sux to get a bad, small school team.
I would love with all the "perceived" attitude change that we might go for a team the same caliber or Arky.
Since we have recruited both arizona and colorado well the past 10 years i suggest Arizona or Colorado St. as 2 options.
I think since Mack was at UNC and might have a connection or 2 back there maybe consider UNC or Duke (i know, whats the diff btw Duke and UTEP).
Other good matchups with good high profile yet not a power house would be teams like Ga Tech, Stanford, Miss St, Tulane, Southern Miss, San Diego St (they have had a few good back the last 15 years). There are many others in this category and see what i am getting at.
Some have said no big time school will want to play us and while that is correct, i dont think Mack wants to play a big time school either. We should be scheduled to make a huge run at the title in '09 so i imagine it will not be a team that is that good, ala tosu.
Please just dont be a Sam Houston st or so.

Play Cal!! It would be a great home and home...or Cal could just come to austin for a one time gig....

I'd love to see Cal on the schedule. I can't imagine them being willing to give us a home game w/o a return to northern california, however. It's worth a try, however. Along the lines of Cal - Duke, Vandy and UVA would all be worth a call - not sure who they have on their schedules right now...

PineG,
that would be great, but i doubt Mack will be willing to play anyone that good. Cal would be a good fit but same thing, it will not be a team that has a shot to beat us, sadly. Hopefully it will be a team from a BCS conf and if so, it will be a team that has a 5% chance to beat us.

with Mack's ties with FSU and them not being at the top right now, i have to think that would be a consideration by us. That would be a beast of a big time game.
BYU, you dont gain much with a win, at least not perceived by media.
UGA will be making a run at the title also, so just based on that and Mack's previous comments, i dont see that. Unless that view has changed this offseason also. Would be a big time game. Game of the year, just like tOsu in '05.

does anybody think after the flak for schedule Sam Houston, that they will schedule Texas State? They shouldn't schedule the Bobcats, but somehow it wouldn't surprise me.
