Who here has been scammed?

Reading the saga of April and Billy I'm wondering how many people here have ever been scammed/cheated out of money and how they responded.

i've only ever been scammed once and it was small change. $50.00 in Jester by a guy that was going to deliver the h-town chronicle to my door every day for the semester. It seemed legit and I was 18 so I gave him 50 and never got a newspaper..

I got a receipt from him and a business card but never did anything with it. It took about two days for me to figure out it was a scam (1st day i thought someone swiped my paper). I laughed about how stupid I was and didn't contact the authorities. I actually kinda admired him for his nerve and gall.

Anyone else (or if you've ever run a scam post it too).

There was a guy selling surplus charity tickets for the D.C. Chamber of Commerce at a restaurant I worked at. He took me for 30 bucks for two Lollapalooza tickets. He took others for tickets to various events. He had an official city receipt booklet and a couple of tickets in his hand. He was going to come back the next day. He never did.

We got a good laugh out of it and how dumb we were too. Then about 5 months later I saw him. I paid a crackhead 20 bucks and gave this dealer guy another 20 to give the dude a bag if he beat the **** out of the guy, which he did. Money well spent and the guy got his rocks.

I hold grudges, you see.

A guy with a great sob story came by the house selling magazine subscriptions. Cannot remember what I ordered, maybe Business Week, but I wrote him a check for about $150. I'm not exactly sure that it was a scam, as I noticed people with similar dress seemingly doing the same thing in my neighborhood for several months after my order. But I never received a magazine.

And then there is my sister, who seems to be running a constant scam on everyone she knows. But having known her MO from any early age, I cannot really claim to have been scammed. I guess that I've just given her alot of money.

I bought some "high-end" speakers from a guy in a white van. This was some time ago so I only paid $35 apiece.

Two decades later a friend also bought speakers from a guy in a white van. He even had a "catalog" page showing their "value." My friend managed to sell them at a garage sale for a profit.

i got taken during college by the dude going door to door collecting the burial fee for the dead baby.

Anyone else?

He came back 3 years later and was tossed in the pool.

Another sucker for white vans here - though years later I did get the pleasure of queering a deal for other van speaker salesmen. Driving by I saw a van and sale going down, jumped out of my car, and told the poor dupe exactly what was going on. The van speaker guys got in my face and very nearly came to blows. They didn't want to hear anything bad when it came to their fine Acoustic Lab Technology speakers!

How is the van selling speakers a scam?

You buy the speakers on the spot and get them. Do they not work or something? Misrepresentation? I figured that it's stolen stuff that "fell off the truck" but no detriment to the consumer. What's the deal there?

I was 21 years old in Hyde Park in London. A old guy came up and started pointing out landmarks to me and continued to do so for about an hour. Then he asked to borrow 5 pounds from me and gave me a nearby address to come get it from him the next day. The address turned out to be a girls school. I was mad and embarrassed that I had been scammed but it probably turned out to be a fair deal overall.

I fell for the ridiculous "booze chain letter" that was circulating around Jester in the fall of 1975. I bought a bottle of Souza for the name at the top of the list, added my name to the bottom, and never got a goddam thing.

I also signed up to sell Mary Kay.

workign at my mom's restaurant, two things happened:
1. dude comes up and says we messed up his order and we owed him some chicken or whatever. I gave it to him.

2. Lady came in with a scar on her head. Said she had the surgery in Michigan and was driving to Banquette to visit sick dad. I gave her 5 bucks. She came back 3 months later with the same story.

I don't feel awful though, they both were obviously hungry or whatever.

My dad fell for the speaker thing, but it only costed him 70 bucks or so.

I also fell for the "you won a free mustang, just buy these magazines" I stopped payment on the check though.

Magazine door to door guys never had any luck with me.

My buddy and I went to the 1995 Allstar game in Arlington at the last minute. We figured we could buy the tickets from a scalper. The first time we tried we were busted by the police, they said if we would have paid face value it would have been o.k.. This guy and his ten year old kid approach us with a sad story about a family death and they have to leave and are looking to get rid of the tickets. We pay face value and go on in to enjoy the pre game festivities, During the second inning an usher comes over and asks us to produce our tickets and then follow him to the office. We find out the the tickets we stolen that morning. We tell our story to the authorities and they let watch the rest of the game from SRO. So it worked out for us in the end.

****- I forgot about the time I bought tickets to yesterday's game from a scalper b/c I didn't check the date. I always check the date now when I scalp. I got let into the building though, so it was all good.
