White Rock Lake

I've been in Dallas for 3 years now, but have never been out to White Rock Lake. Are there spots you can go to at sunset or just after dark and just park and walk around? I'm looking for something romantic, i.e. possible proposal locations. Maybe an area where you can sit, look out over the water, and maybe have a view of downtown. Thanks in advance.

yes and no. about the only place you can see downtown real good is from flagpole hill. however, there are several areas with park benches and what not to sit and relax. There are two areas I prefer.

1. over by the spillway by the arboretum. you can see downtown from there and there are lots of places to sit and watch the bike/foot traffic.

2. over on the west side of the lake by the larger houses. a few nice semi-secluded areas there.

Just head out there. There are streets you can drive almost all the way around the lake. you'll find a spot.

There's a trail that runs around the entire lake. Any houses are behind the trail on the opposite side of the road that runs beside the trail.

You should probably check the lake out sometime before your proposal.

use some friends for help...

idea- if you can scope out a huge tree with a perfect setting, wrap that tree with a sh%t ton of white christmas lights, get a generator with a plug- or find a plug and use extension cords, etc.
walk your gal by the tree, cue your friends, drop to a knee and do your thing.
if there are no trees- wrap a bench, lay them all over the ground, or something. white lights on a good night= awesome.
good luck.

Just be sure to ask in a loud voice so she can hear you over the sound of the generator.

I echo Winfrey Point. We've had picnics there and watched the sun go down, and it's a great view. Might want to check and make sure there isn't a wedding or party booked in the lodge that night, though - otherwise your setting won't be quite as quiet and romantic.

I just called, and Winfrey Point is reserved every Fri. and Sat. night for the rest of June. My question is, since a reservation means you are just renting the clubhouse, would I still be able to go down near the lake area and hang out for a while? I wasn't planning on being there very long, just enough time to maybe have a glass of wine and pop the question. Are there spots just off to the sides of the reserved area that would be doable? Or should I just go to a completely different spot?

You can tell from that picture the clubhouse sits a bit up and away from the lake. There is a small parking lot near the bottom by the road. The trail runs between the road and lake. There are probably (I can't recall) a couple of park benches there near the shore.

That said, why not do this on a weekday? It would be less crowded.

There's another spot with a small dock further down where ducks gather. Do you both work downtown? You might suggest getting together on your lunch hour to share a picnic lunch and feed them.

We live in Frisco, and she stays at home during the day, so getting her out there on a weekday for lunch would be difficult. That's why I need to frame it as a regular Fri/Sat night, going out to dinner.

So then Winfrey Point is still the best option, even though it's reserved?

You'll be fine man. Just start there and walk on the trail by the lake. There are benches and such everywhere. Trust me, you'll be fine.

You need to go on a recon mission. There are a lot of very nice spots along White Rock.

No ****, I think running out there every day during law school saved my sanity. It is a special place.

Once in the parking lot by the spillway, a naked man with a hatchet came out of the woods and attacked two couples in a van, killing a girl, IIRC.

Yes, that really happened in real life, in about 1989.

Anyway, Part of my regular repertoire in high school was to end dates with a late night walk through the woods by the spillway to the old water building before the city renovated it. I'm smooth like Billy Dee Williams.
