Haven't stayed at the Driskill, but I did stay at the SFA once. I love the bar, but the room was a real disappointment. We had an upgraded room, a junior suite. I've stayed in Hiltons that are cleaner and in better shape.
In fact, my experience was so poor regarding room condition and staff customer service that I wrote a letter to the GM of the property. I had never done that before. If I want to spend too much money to stay in an overrated room and get treated like **** by the staff, I'll get a room at a W.
We stayed at the SFA on our wedding night. I won't say I'll never stay there again -- the room was nice, everything was clean and new, etc. -- but it wasn't worth the money. My biggest complaint was no room service after 11 PM. If it had been a Tuesday night, well, maybe, but on a Saturday night? That's bush league. We ended up walking down towards 6th Street and got some hot dogs.
I wonder how the priceline thing works then; assume $70 bid will get you SFA but $89 will get you driskill; if you bid $89, can they still throw you in the SFA?
I don't know how priceline selects one hotel over another, but I have heard that all of Austin's top hotels are in one "region", so you can start super low in that region only, and inch your bid up adding one region at a time to get the best price on a great hotel. I think it works out to something like 6 bids in all.
yeah, i bid $85 and ended up getting stuck with the hyatt, oh well. i think normal rates for a friday night are $250+, so it's a good deal. We have plans at the cedar door, so it might end up working out. anyone have any thoughts on the hyatt near the bat bridge?
