I find it sad and frustrating when Gary Johnson admits last year's seniors were not helpful. So I guess we can add "no leadership" to their awful FT percentages.
But you can tell there's definitely an attitude shift. Even if this team loses 15 games, I have a feeling that it will still be better to watch them than last year's crew.
A lot of encouraging things in that article - hope it translates onto the court! Sure don't want to watch an entire year of uninterrupted underachievement!
The one thing that stands out to me in that article is J'covan Brown admitting he was lazy last year. If he and Hamilton play with maximum physical and mental effort this year, the team could be very, very good, even with limitations in the post on both ends. If those two can't get it together as defenders, this year might become really ugly.
That is one of the most exciting articles on UT basketball in a long time. There is the good news about Hamilton and Brown admitting they were lazy. Johnson admitting that they didn't have good leadership. Barnes saying that they would run more sets in order to get more ball movemennt. And the good news about Thompson, Hamilton, and Hill playing well in the scrimmages. All are huge for this year to be a success.
I'm still not sold that we have the depth to be B12 contenders, but for some reason I feel a little more confident in the team. Hopefully this isn't just talk, and that the guys really have grown up. Almost as important is the offensive shift. You don't have to have a team full of offensive threats when you create mismatches with your sets. Barnes will be able to dictate who gets the ball and where.
This isn't 1999, but Barnes did it with a 7-man rotation. If they know what they're doing and why they're doing it and are willing to do it... this season will be better than the last two.
