"Children trapped on a mountain by Islamic State militants in Iraq are drinking blood from their parents to stay alive, it emerged today.

Their horrendous plight was revealed after some 8,000 Yazidis were finally able to escape down Mount Sinjar where they have been under siege from jihadist fighters for the last week.

Those fleeing have made it to relative safety at a camp in Dohuk Province in Kurdistan, where they have told horrific stories of the 30,000 who have been left behind.

Sky News correspondent Sherine Tadros, who is at the camp, said: 'One man has just told us how he saw four children die of thirst.

'There was nowhere to bury them on the mountain so they just put rocks on their bodies.

'Another man was saying the children were so thirsty, their parents started cutting their own hands and giving them blood to drink.'

How can we, the civilized world, just stand by/Oh I know we have been studying the situation. How long does that take when people are trapped and dying?

Who isn't responding? The US has dropped aid (50% destroyed on landing), the UK has dropped aid, the Iraq army and Kurds have been flying helicopters in for rescue. The Kurdish army yesterday punched a hole through the IS siege to rescue 20k.

Outside of going all out war on a well armed (they have US artillery and weaponry) 10k IS fighters I'm wondering what anyone is hoping for that isn't already occurring?

I agree with huisache though...this is NOT a rare occurrence in relation to the rest of the world. There are areas all across Africa where this type of dilemma is all too common, unfortunately, not the scale but women and children dying en mass.

Horn6721 fake posts of heartache aside, the die is cast. There will be U.S. Military personnel on a humanitarian mission. During that mission an "event" will happen (rescue chopper shot down, mortar fire on the mission, etc), which will attempt to force the President to authorize actual military engagement.

Even under this sort of pressure, Obama will NOT give that authorization, preferring to 'take the hit' from his opponents, instead increasing air strikes and support for the Kurds. And a majority of Americans will be glad that he didn't.

my favorite paleo conservative Pat Buchanan has an interesting column on this attempt by the war party to whip up US military action. He points out that the second biggest NATO military force belongs to Turkey and is real handy and has a lot more to worry about from these animals than we do. Even al quaeda hates them. LEt the locas settle the hash.

Our involvement should be humanitarian, not military.

yes we have dropped water and food,How much?
there are reported to still be 35,000 on the mountain after nearly 30,000 were led down in the lst day or so

so that means there were nearly 65,000-70,000 there without food or most importantly without water>
The Red Cross reported that over 50% of what the US did drop was destroyed as it hit.
I don't know how many airdrops it would take just to make sure everyone had enough water but what has been dropped isn't enough.
but this report in link in OP is from someone from Skye news who is there on the mountain and apparently there still isn't enough water today.

Please Haters notice I included the entire civilized world. There are many many countries who could send water and who could ever air drop food and water. Where are they?

Today the US announced it was considering a military air lift of the people left on the mountain. Hopefully other nations will step up and join us. Can you imagine the logistics of such an operation?

So how does a government with limited resources decide when to spend money on humanitarian aid and much more expensive military intervention? When is spending money on simple underwear an expense we can't bear?

It's a complicated world and while US resources are astounding by world standards, they are certainly finite.

One thing I can go to sleep knowing that I know. Whether Obama's decision is either, neither or both, right wingers will complain and tell me it proves he's the stupidest president ever.

Be the world police or accept that bad things are going to happen to people in a lot of the world. It's tough to sit back and watch the horrors happening knowing that we often have the ability to stop it. The problem is the number that happen and picking and choosing where to act and where to let people get slaughtered. I would prefer that we focus on the US and our more immediate sphere of influence, Mexico and Central America. They share our value system in more ways and there is a direct benefit to us when they don't walk across our border illegally. I know this is a unique situation, but spending money in the ME in general seems like sending it down a rat hole. The factions have been fighting for thousands of years and there is nothing we can do to stop it.

Second, I'm in favor of whatever actions need to be taken as long as we raise taxes to pay for it and, if war is required, institute a draft for men in the proper age group and national service for others.

I don't want anybody to not have to toil to support the needed action.

When students learn about the holocaust, they often remark "How could we let that happen?" Well, this is not being committed on as large of a scale by a long shot. However, an analogy can be made.

The nazis were taken care of for the most part. The same needs to happen with isis, hamas, and the taliban. The civilized world needs to band together and exterminate them
without apology. Islamic extremists are nothing more than a blight on the world stage.

The problem is that people tend to marginalize their efforts to establish muslim caliphate. Sometimes their atrocities are excused by making an argument based upon moral relativism. Regardless, the problem is real and needs to be dealt with.
