Where's a good place to buy furniture?

We've been shopping for some furniture lately. We're about to move and we're looking to upgrade or expand just about everything - sofa, dresser, dining table, entertainment center.

Seems like everything is either cheaply made or expensive as hell. Or, in the case of Crate & Barrel/Pottery Barn, both. What's the deal? Dresser drawers feel like they're made out of cardboard. Tables on the showroom floor wobble when you touch them. Is this just the way stuff is nowadays? I don't remember stuff being this bad the last time I went furniture shopping (which admittedly has been a while).

We found a few things at Bassett and Storehouse that seemed decent but were pretty disappointed in Haverty's & Rooms to Go. The "Furniture Row" stuff was really bad. We've been to a couple of boutiquey places but some of that stuff is just too far out there, plus it seems like they have mostly accent pieces as opposed to actual core furniture.

Anybody have any advice? Is there anything I should be looking for to see if they're cutting corners on quality? Any recommendations for a particular store I should take a look at?

I went to Louis Shanks on Sunday. They had a dining room that I really liked. It was "marked down" to about $20,000 vs. the "list" price of about $30,000.

I've always thought that it's better to splurge and get furtinure you really like since you may have to live with it for 20+ years, but $20k still seems like a lot to pay for some wood, fabric and fixtures.

If you know of a particular piece or set of furniture that you really like check online at furniturelandsouth.com. They ship it out of Carolina. I saved 40% (on total cost including shipping)on what I would have spent at Havertys for the same furniture. The only hassle is the delivery takes about a month. To me it was worth it though.
