Where would you go?

Friend has son who was recruited by OU, I've mentioned him previously. It wasn't crystal clear, but when I talked to Dad the other day, it seems as though OU has backed off somewhat, which is good for the kid IMO.

Very good student, musically talented, has serious ambitions. Wants to be Doc. OL, 6'6", 260, lean, three year starter at a small 3A school, northeast of DFW.

Dad said the other day calls have increased from schools such as UNT, New Mexico something, not sure, Montana State, SMU.
Funny, Dad said Montana state has been calling at the same time every week, very interested.

Dad interested in best education, would like kid to stay close to home. Sounds like Dad will veto Montana State, others I dont' think he cares.

Burnt orange, I agree with you, and I'm thinking Baylor could be the best mix of academics and maybe playing earlier. SMU connections could be the best, I'm guessing. Rice, the last time I talked to the kid he said he would be interested in Rice, I think his coach needs to get more aggressive, I haven't heard Rice mentioned from anybody in the house.

Which recruiting service is the best to look up this kid and see if he is rated? I'm guessing two or three stars, but have no clue?

Not to knock any of the recruiting services, I'm sure they do great. When I was coaching in small 1A the most effective thing to get the 1-2 guys I had that could play at the next level was simply sending highlight tapes to the coaches that were assigned to recruit our area. We had several on campus visits from D-1 schools from just doing that. Send them often and send lots. I would recommend getting game tapes from the coaches and dubbing and editing them to be sent. I would also include academic info. Good luck.

Agreed w/ SMU and Vandy. Also, I know it's not close to home, but how about Stanford? They're pretty damn good and obviously the academics can't be beat.

North Texas is close, has a better music school than any of the other schools listed and the Medical School is in Ft Worth which is close also. And most importantly if he was being recruited by OU then Todd Dodge needs him.

Cambridge.....

Yep - I thought about Vandy and Stanford, maybe Duke, decided they were too far away. UNT's good for music, too, but if you aren't looking to be a band director I dunno if it's all that good an idea.

One of my uncles played at Stanford - he got a Rose Bowl BLANKET instead of a ring (sure wish Aunt Jo had given it to me instead of Goodwill), and I'm pretty damn sure he never got any free shoes... but then he came home and went to SMU Law.

Med school admissions can be sabotaged by what playing FB does to a GPA. Unless the kid is a SUPERstar student, I would consider a less rigorous curriculum with less academic competition. A strong GPA and the added flavoring of D1 football experience will look much better than a mediocre stack of report cards and some excuses about a tough school and tough practice schedule when it comes time to apply.

With that in mind, I would consider a school like UNT or Tech over Rice. Of course, I have colleagues who played ball at UT, UNT, Tech, Harvard, and elsewhere: a lot depends on the kid.

not a superstar student, just above average. The music thing is what intrigues me. This kid is a fantanstic piano player(classical). I hope/expect him to choose either UNT or SMU. I think he envisions footbal as a way to pay for college.

I would recommend UNT for the music department. Music is a decent in to med school, provided that he takes the relevant courses for the MCAT and a MCAT review. Technical graduate programs like medicine always like students well grounded in arts as it demonstrates a well rounded individual. Your friend would be a accomplished pianist, D-1 football player and (hopefully) solid in the relevant pre-med courses. Sounds like a renaissance man to me and damn attractive to any graduate program, including medical school.

I played f-ball at Tulane 89-92 for none other than G Davis. I would highly recommend NOT sending your son (or daughter) to that program. Frankly, I could not endorse sending an 18 year old to school in New Orleans for many reasons. And as football is concerned, you will find much better facilities, support and overall experience at somewhere other than Tulane (as much as I hate to say it). If you are looking at more academically solid schools, keep the kid somewhere in Texas... SMU, Rice, etc as others had said.

"I played f-ball at Tulane 89-92 for none other than G Davis."

Boy, there are probably ton of Hornfans that would love your account of that time with Mr. Offense.

Playing for GD was cool. I had a blast in his program. And his players, for the most part, liked playing for the guy. I worked with him alot because I was on the offensive side of the ball. My position coach (forget his name) was an *******. We were a 4 or 5 win team most years, but Davis had some talent there at that time and was putting up some pretty good off. numbers. Defense was always terrible.

Also on staff when I was there was Tim Nunez and Hardee McCrary who both wound up on early Mack Brown staffs at UT. McCrary recruited me while playing HS in San Antonio. Nunez and McCrary were great.

In those years, Tulane was playing more big time programs... Florida St and LSU to name a couple. Also played against Brett Favre from So Miss and Brian Mitchell (I think that was his name... great kick returner as a pro... QB in college) from USL (now Louisiana-Lafayette). And one of the more memorable games was a last second score and victory on the road against a decent Syracuse team. Also, was within 6 of FSU in the 4th Qtr my fresh year (I think) and 1st and goal before fumbling and wound up losing by two/three scores. It felt like a victory. The Seminole band was spitting on us and yelling obscenities as we took the field. I thought that was interesting. Used to get police escorts to the Superdome on Gameday where we played in front of 20-25k on average (unless LSU or FSU was in town). Sometimes less.

The problem with Tulane is they have very little local support. New Orleans is, understandably, an LSU town. Plus, the Tulane alumni are spread out all over the country. Very few remain in New Orleans. As a student body, they have a very large ratio of students from somewhere other than Louisiana. Many come from the Northeast US and could care less about football.

There were a couple of linebackers on the team when I was a fresh and soph who went to the league... Richard Harvey and Lonnie Marts. Harvey used to abuse us while we ran on scout teams my first year there. Marts was a great guy and became a friend. We stayed in touch for a while after he was drafted by the Chiefs.

It was an experience I wouldn't trade for anything (as all of my college experience in New Orleans was).

I get what you are saying - New Orleans is dangerous, kids are able to go to bars at a young age, too much partying, etc. However, it is a good school academically and you can succeed in football and school. For example, I have a friend who is an orthopedic surgeon in Houston who played football there. It is a small school environment where teachers know whether or not you attend class and help nurture students. So there are a lot of pluses to Tulane too.

Rice is an awfully good undergrad school, although I know nothing about their music department. I would think it would be ideal for pre-med. If the young man could get in on a football scholarship, seems like it would be well worth a close look.

SMU sends far fewer students to Med School than many would believe. My wife went to UT Southwestern Medical School right there in Dallas, and while UT had about 40-50 grads in each class, SMU had 1, sometimes 2. Baylor had at least 5-6. Not suprisingly, Rice students tend to favor the Houston and Galveston schools. My sister went to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and there were almost as many Rice students as UT students. A&M was a not-too-close 3rd at BCM and a not-too-close 2nd at UTSWMS. I don't recall many TCU, TT or UNT students at UTSWMS, but I'm sure 1 or 2 make it in from each of those schools every year.

what is all of this crap about SMU, they are a crappy school and the spoiled kids are worse, go to TCU if you want something comparable and the kids are better. I would go to Rice, its the best school in the southwest other than Texas. Vanderbilt is also a nice choice.
