Where can you not take a pocket knife?

My Dad got me a nice Browning lock blade pocket knife for my birthday (which is in July but he was in town for Father's Day). It has a clip on it and it is slim enough that I can put in my pocket or clip to my jeans...

But I was wondering, where can you _not_ take a pocket knife? Obviously the airport but I was feeling strange with it today as I was walking by security entrance at work.

Blade is 2.5" long so this isn't something Rambo uses. I say that b/c I know that at some point, you can't have a knife too long.

It's not illegal to carry a knife under 5.5" I believe. But i think it is illegal to carry one in any federal facility. Obviously any place that scans you with a detector is probably not going to let you take it in but that doesn't make it illegal to have.

if you take it into a sporting event be sure it iis fully in your pocket and out of sight. some ticket scanners will not let you in if they see it clipped to your pocket even if the blade is small enough to be legal.

I've been carrying a pocket knife since I was in high school.

I got stopped once entering a courthouse, (jury duty), that had a metal detector. They made me go back and leave it in the car.

Other than airports, that's the only time I've been stopped by it.

I usually try to remember to leave it in the car when going to concerts or sporting events, but I've never had a probelm when I've forgotten.

I've carried a pocket knife forever. I don't carry it into Mexico, federal buildings, or airports. Other than that, no problems.

While they don't usually scan you, nightclubs in the city will be a no-no.

I say "in the city" because you usually don't have this issue out in the country; it's sorta assumed that everyone is carrying some kind of a knife.

i used to carry one back in and shortly after high school. one year, back in the 90s, i went up north to see some family and had it clipped to my jeans like always without thinking about it. noticed it when i emptied my pockets for the metal detectors at the airport. sent it through with keys and everything. guys pick it up, measure the blade, and hand it back to me saying its ok and i take it on the plane with me. take it on the plane on the way back as well. then when up in DC, went to holocaust museum where they wouldn't let me in with it. airport policy has since changed.

this is no help, i know, but i just think its interesting that they would knowingly let me walk on to a plane with a 3" knife.

You cannot carry a knife with a locking blade in San Antonio.

Also (ironically), I have a friend who moved to Detroit recently, and he says anything over 2" in public is illegal and they will take you to jail for it.

Out of curiosity, why the **** do you need a pocket knife 'out on the town'?

Seriously, (a) when is the last time you got into some **** out in the 'hood, and (b) would a ******* pocket knife have really helped you out then?

If the answers are (a) recently and (b) Hell yes, then I want to fight in your neighborhood...

I was getting a little too much lip from a piece of dried sausage the other day, so I used my pocketknife on him. Sliced him good.

Yeah, this knife isn't for protection. It is mostly for when you need a knife to cut something. Believe it or not, but they are pretty handy. And probably better than using your key or teeth (which I see people doing by the way). I always keep a pocket knife in my glove box also. In fact, I have the Leatherman E306 in my car.

It's not that you need a knife at a museum. I carry a pocket knife and pick it up off the dresser when I pick up my wallet and keys. I have it with me, and I use it almost every day. If you go to a museum, do you take the $8.50 you need to get in, or do you grab your wallet and just go?

exactly. i didn't decide to take it or not take it anywhere. it was just something i grabbed every morning along with my wallet and keys. and sometimes, when i forget i'm going someplace unusual, i've had to deal with that.

i don't carry one anymore, but i wonder what i'd do if i were in or saw a car crash and needed to cut a seatbelt open or something like that. keys and teeth won't do the job.

Everytime I go to the State Surplus property store I see this bin get bigger and bigger. Those airport scanners are working overtime I guess. You can pick up excellent knives screwdrivers, bottle openers, etc. for a buck a piece.

What Friday said. I lost mine at the State Fair only because I instinctively put it in my pocket like I normally do.

If however, while at the fair someone was bitten by a super poisonous 30 foot anaconda, I could use my pocketknife to lance the bite, then I'd suck the poison out. Ignatius, you won't think it's so funny if I save your life someday at the fair. Then you'd have to buy me a corn dog.
