Whatever happened to Jim Bertelson, the Horn's running back of the Nat'l Champ team of the 60's that beat Arkansas in "The Game of the Century", scoring the winning TD. He was from up north, Ohio? Penn? and came to Texas because he wanted to play in warm weather. I was reminded of him by the film clip at the UT-Ark game this week-end. Did he stay in Texas or go back up north? Just wondering.

Bertelsen was from Wisconsin - good question, now you've got me curious too.......

not sure what his story is lately... last i knew of him he was a rb w/ the rams in the 70's... i believe his family dentist had a connection with darrell royal or one his staff.

Bertelsen also played NFL football on some good Los Angeles Rams teams in the early 70s. He was mostly a blocking back for Lawrence McCutchen. According to Wikipedia, he returned to Austin after his NFL playing days.

one of my all-time favorite horns. could do everything very well: run the ball and move the chains, block, catch--even played ST well in the league.

not surprising that we haven't heard a lot about him. he will stay off of the radar and to himself as much as possible.

That is a good question and it would be good to have updates on lots of our former players. Jim came to Texas to play in warmer weather but what was ironic is that he showed up for his visit on the coldest day of the year. He said what sold him was we had just gone through three straight 6 - 4 seasons and he noticed that everyone was unhappy about it. He said that convinced him because he knew we played to win so he came here and was a great player for us.

Not long after his NFL career, he bought a nice house across the street from my brother in Northwest Hills. Nice guy & good neighbor he says, but that was in the late '70s.

He lives in Wimberley. He was an assistant coach on my little league baseball team. I grew up with his son, so I got to see him and talk to him a lot. Very cool.
