if you use the "search" function you will find many threads on this topic. but i will save you the time and tell you right now the answer is the olive garden in times square

i have a suggestion

pick a type of meal you want (small authentic italian) and a neighborhood (village) and i bet you get some answers

otherwise, zagats and roll the dice.

I have only been to NY City one time. I went to little Italy and went into a random Italian restraunt and had one of the best meals that I had in years.

Mr. Ks is 5-star Chinese/Asian. One of the best meals I've ever had. There's one in D.C. too.

i moved up here about 3 months ago and the best place ive found thus far is cilantro. its a small mexican place, good margaritas and killer salsa. its over by the natural history museum, on 83th and columbus. besides that, you pretty much cant go wrong with any place in little italy. just walk down mulberry, look at a few menus, and go with whatever catches your eye. as far as pizza.....seneca pizza in brooklyn is the best ive had so far.

that's gone, too, if you're referring to the one that was in times square. I actually loved that place for a late night cocktail. or a late night plate of clam strips and a chocolate shake. it was super old school.

Wow... that's actually sad. I remember my dad taking me to the Howard Johnson's on I-10 in the early 80s for clam strips. They were the best.

If you go to little italy, most of the restaurants will have people come out and solicit their business while you look at their menus. We went to Amici II because the guy offered us free sangria, and said if there was anything NOT on the menu that we wanted, they would make it for us. It was the best food and best overall dining experience I have ever had in my life.

I think Carnegie Deli is also a must. You will NEVER have cheesecake this good.

Go to Magnolia Bakery for a cupcake. I think they're good, but not worth waiting in a long line for.

Ray's Pizza was good...I wouldn't say great by any stretch of the imagination. It's more drunk pizza than culinary excellence.

Sylvia's. There are a lot of good soul food, and other types of restaurants in Harlem, but half of them don't even have a sign outside. I went to one donut shop that used to be a jewelry store based on the decor and cabinets inside, and the awning on the outside. I imagine a good bit of the establishments don't make it long. There are probably better soul food restaurants, but Sylvia's is stable.

Ah yes, I fondly remember growing up in Italy and the days we would sit around and drink authentic Italian sangria...

Here is an excerpt of an email I just sent to a friend:

Places to eat -

Gramercy Tavern - American. (you can do the tavern in the front without making reservations) - my favorite restaurant in New York

Bond Street is not bad for Sushi. Sushi Samba is not bad either. Nobu is good. Morimoto is excellent hot food but the sushi is only ok and the service is awful . Masa and Sushi Yasuda are the best but are more expensive.

For Italian - I like all the Batali restaurants - Otto, Lupa, Babbo, Del Posta. Also Peasant and Lo Scalco. Otto is very low key and is an good chill dining experience. Also very inexpensive relative to some of the others.

Bread Bar @ Tabla - Americanized indian. Try the tamarind margarita - its unbelievable.

Markt and Vento are good for brunch. So is Sarabeths.

For Burgers I really like Wollensky Grill and Corner Bistro.

For Mexican - Rosa Mexicana and Dos Caminos are ok for mexican in the city and for a kind of grungy and tons of fun mexican place - Tortilla Flats.

I really like Pipa for Tapas. It is not super expensive either.

For Asian Fusion - Kittichai and Asia de Cuba are both awesome. Spice Market is the jean georges asian restaurant. It is a good scene, but the food is not as good as Asia or Kitiichai

Skip the Bobby Flay restaurants, they're unremarkable (Bolo, Meda Grill, etc.).

One afternoon go to McSoreley's Old Ale House. Order two lights and two darks for one round. Get the cheese plate. Stay there for several hours drinking and eating. Fantastic place.

Lombardi's is great

If you like Tuscan check out Peasant. Great food.

I also had a burger at Corner Bistro that was great.
